Twenty billion barrels of oil sit beneath Los Angeles.
Hidden in plain sight, thousands of wells pump day and night all over the city covered by hollow office buildings, camouflaged next to high schools, and concealed behind shopping malls.

1. Does anyone know if there's a relationship between oil deposits..
and earthquakes? Some kind of friction/lubrication relationship?

I could be completely off, so don't laugh. :)

The Pacific plate is constantly moving. Maybe lubrication is a bad thing, but that's why I asked the question.

Edit: Looks like I'm not the only one wondering about this..

3. doubtful
Japan is in an seismically active area, has little oil. Saudi Arabia has a ton of oil, but is not a seismically active area.

5. That's really interesting!
I live in a suburb of LA, and I know there's oil here....but I didn't know there was this much!

I'm happy to hear they're getting the oil out...
