The generals won - everything. - Analysis from Col. Pat Lang (Ret.)

Basically, the generals and their allies "rolled" Obama on this one. They reckon that they can do it again, because he is weak willed and they are not.

This has become a self-licking ice cream cone. War without end, amen.

Obama? He will have to be the camel that walks through the eye of the needle. Hillary Clinton? Her devotion to team membership is excessive.

..........................................

Whatever "democracy" existed in this country in the past is dead.

Thomas Jefferson warned us. Ike warned us.

Oh sure they'll let you vote for President. But anyone with any idea of actually implementing a major draw-down of the military industrial congressional complex will never see the light of day as a serious contender for the Presidency of the US. They won't allow it to happen.

1. Maybe all too true
Just witness the outright support the MIC gets on DU of all places.

If Obama knows he got rolled, there's hope. If not, that's all she wrote.

2. Not sure I agree with you on all that. Military did get what they wanted,
but they also got a timeline. Here;s what you said you needed, so go get the job done, and you have 18 months to do it!

3. Obama will get rolled on the timeline too...
Edited on Thu Dec-03-09 01:57 AM by Postman
as time goes on and as more people die on all sides and as nothing of significance changes on the ground, the time line approaches and the corporate media will be pushing the right-wing talking points pressuring him to A) Send yet more troops that the Generals will inevitably ask for-- B) Be labled as the loser of the Afghanistan War because he "cut & ran" allowing the terrorists to "win"

Obama just signed his own pink slip for 2012

6. I don't think so. I believe the Generals were told here you are...all you asked for,
so now you have 18 months to prove you were right. I think Obama willhold them to that.

8. I doubt it. The military industry complex and the corporations have won everything so far from this
adminstration.

A time-line for Pentagon is just something for them to manipulate.

16. Wishful thinking. How will he hold them to that?
If he didn't say it outright?
And how will you hold Obama to that?

He has bowed to the meme that the only option is winning.
And nobody knows what winning is.

So they'll determine the begin of withdrawl by conditions on the ground. And whom will they ask? The fucking generals.

17. I'm a little baffled by DU that this doesn't get much traction.
The "at least there is a timeline" meme to pacify the antiwar-crowd is already dead.

But rest assured, it will still be used by the escalationmongers on DU for a long time. Until they have to switch to telling us: "You wanted a pony? But didn't you pay attention to the hearings?"
Oh, and it will be used by the Repubs to let the president appear as favouring the "enemy" by giving the date. Don't hope facts will keep them from doing that.

So this "timeline" does nothing to end the war, it only delivers a talkingpoint to the rightwing.

13. Not so - that Timeline is already out the window as of this morning.
It's only in there to "placate" the "left".

Nice.

4. Why talk about the military? The barons got what they wanted.
The military is the middle man. It's our structure. Must keep up the delusions.

5. We held a Jazz Funeral for Democracy in New Orleans in January 2004
A cancer grew within America from the time JFK was assassinated until it fully metastasized when the SCOTUS appointed Bushler.

9. Bullshit.
Obama has been saying for at least two years that we need a renewed focus on Afghanistan. This move should surprise no one.

If you hate the policy, fine -- you're entitled to your opinion. But claiming that Obama is weak or getting rolled is stupid shit.

11. "Military industrial congressional complex"
I would add "financial" in there too, military industrial financial congressional complex, but I like it.

Isn't "know the enemy" one of the first rules of war, just as "know yourself" is one of the first rules of life?

19. ''Thomas Jefferson warned us. Ike warned us'' and JFK stood up to them.
Kennedy and Vietnam documents a major part of how we got to where we are today, fodder units for the world's elite.
