Language Wonks: Was bedeutet das wort "EXTRA"
as an adjective for troops? I've heard it consistently in English language reportage on this side of the pond AND in voice-over translations. It smacked me in the face today checking out Channel4 News from the UK.

30,000 extra U.S. troops blah, blah, blah...

EXTRAS? Are they Kompaserie in a Busby Berkeley production or what?

1. I fail to see the problem here.
"Extra" in this usage, as an adjective, means "More than, or beyond what is usual, normal, expected or necessary." In other words, it's synonymous in its primary definition with "additional."
