So now "dead cell phone battery" replaces "it is in the mail"?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_uninvited_guests

Tareq and Michaele Salahi pressed the friendly Pentagon aide for four days to score tickets to the big event. By their own admission in the e-mails, they showed up at the White House gates at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 without an invitation — "to just check in, in case it got approved since we didn't know, and our name was indeed on the list!"

But the Secret Service has said they weren't on that list and that it erred by letting them in anyway.

In an e-mail sent just hours after last week's dinner to Pentagon official Michele Jones, the Salahis claimed a dead cell phone battery prevented them from hearing Jones' voice mail earlier that day advising them they did not make the guest list.

I hope that Ms. Jones puts as much distance as she can between herself and these selfish users.

1. lol...my friend has been using that one for years...
he only switched to that after the "I couldn't get a signal" didn't hold water anymore...

his other standbys: "My phone was broken", and "My service was cut off temporarily during a late bill dispute"

3. Attention whores - charge them, give them a trial, convict them, and lock them up.
If it had been anyone who "looked Arab" or had an "Arab name" or some guy living out of his van on 15th and K, he'd be in jail and FOX would be ranting about how he should be executed on the spot.

That pair is sleazy, but they've got connections. Charge them with any and everything possible.

6. I'm more concerned about the failure in procedure that allowed them in without being on the list.

I don't know all the details of attending an event at the WH, but I would hope people would still have to pass through security checks and detectors like they do at airports. I would hope that the Obama's were never in any danger, but what if the uninvited guests had smuggled in poison or something?

How did this break down in security happen? I would think if you aren't on the list, you don't get in and you are questioned as to why you showed up.

There are so many crazies in the world today, it's shocking that such a mistake could be made. I would hope there would be multiple checks in the future.

7. Yes, security, and the secret service is looking into it
However, since this was the very first event in this administration, the "social secretary" or whoever was in charge of the list, should have been doing the rounds of these gates. Thus, if there were doubt, the guard could have told them to wait a few minutes since the person in charge was doing the rounds and would be there soon. Thus, relieving the poor guy, probably making a 1/10 of the salary compared to most of the guests, from a bind.

9. It's reached the point where I'm a prisoner of cell phone chargers
I've got my phone on vibrate almost all the time, so I'm constantly on the lookout for someplace to charge.

In the old days there used to be stand-alone chargers for extra batteries, but I haven't seen those for Blackberries.

10. I have a pre paid phone
and I turn it off at night.

I do, however, have a land line, too.

I really think that no one should be tethered to a phone or a computer or any other mode of communication "24/7."

This is really a modern day slavery. Expecially if your employer demands this.
