1. Precisely why i haven't said much on this tragedy
the only people that know why Cho did this is Cho and his maker.

18. Exactly!
All these people on the radio and television who spout all of these reasons...they don't have a clue as to why Cho did this. These people want to talk just to hear themselves talk.

As the saying goes, "If it bleeds, it leads."

He was able to because Virginia has some lax gun laws.

6. I have no idea why he did it
And neither does anyone else! As you stated many people will use a tragedy to forward their own personal agendas, or just to show their "expertise".

Only he knows why he did it!

7. Correction; SOME People Are Assholes
Whenever something like the massacre at Va Tech happens, assholes seems to come out of the woodwork.

I take comfort, however, in the fact that not all people are assholes.

Most people are kind and compassionate.

Some people are even reasonable.

14. Sorry but all republicans I have known and heard are assholes who deserve the deepest holes we can
find to put them in. I have yet to meet a kind, caring, compassionate republican. They are greedy selfish and jealous assholes who hate everyone that doesn't believe that they have answers. Remember these are the same assholes who wanted the death penelty for a 5 year old for bringing a gun to school and killing a classmate. These are the same assholes that say all criminals should be locked up forever unless that person happens to be rich or powerful. These assholes are the same ones who put shrub in office twice.

I can't stand assholes, and most humans are assholes.

I'd like to believe that there are more reasonable and kind people than not, but that just hasn't been true in my experience. I look at the world, and I see humans killing it, killing other animals, and killing each other and raping and torturing and hating and judging. Someone who you think is halfway decent will suddenly pop up with an angry tirade about how they'd torture and slowly kill the perpetrator of the Crime of the Week or make a racist or sexist or any other kind of prejudiced statement or will take their dog to the vet to be killed just because he got bigger than they were expecting or something like that.

I'm not out to censor anyone, so don't jump on me about purity and expecting perfection. I am free to choose to not associate with people.

9. It's the republican way plain and simple.
Notice how soon they forget the home grown psychopaths? Also notice that the pro gun nuts are all back saying we need to arm students and teachers? Yet not one thought about the fact that by arming everyone they will also be arming the next psychopath or just how many people will be killed in panic and cross fire? Don't they realize that arming religious nuts will just give us more dangerous psychopaths like those in Waco? The right wing has their heads so far shoved up their ass they can't think because of the methane overdose.

What ever your pet issue is, you most likely jumped immediately to it.

I did.

That's why I just kept my mouth shut on the matter until yesterday.

15. I'm only an asshole when responding to assholes. Pet projects? None that I know of
though I do believe that everyone should have an equal chance at living and money or family shouldn't play in the decision of my getting ahead or not. But then I'm a bleeding heart liberal and damn proud of it.

12. Yep, gun control, mental illness, gawd, gun rights, even abortion rights.
Oddest post on DU that I saw about it was the day of the shooting and someone claiming they were POSITIVE the guy was a paranoid schizophrenic. (Dr Frist, calling Dr. Frist) - and that the reason the guy shot the place up was because we don't have enough mental hospitals in this country.

Oddest post I've seen outside DU was someone claiming that because China forces people to abort after the 1st child then that caused the guy to be filled with the devil and if we just outlawed abortion worldwide Jesus would make everyone perfect and wonderful.

20. These events are like a Rorschach test...
... everyone projects whatever's going on in their head to the situation.

The only thing that seems reasonably objective:

There are lots of folks who are probably thinking thoughts similar to those thought by Mr. Cho.

Should we make it easy or hard for these pathetic ( but DANGEROUS) creatures to get their hands on automatic weaponry?

Possession of an automatic weapon is a 10-year felony unless you are military or police, or have Federal authorization (BATFE Form 4). This jerkoff used a pair of ordinary pistols (a 9mm and a .22), not "automatic weaponry."

23. What I found interesting was when the shootings were first...
reported it was the first two who were killed and there was a mild interest in it. Then when more reports started coming out there were 20, 22 and the final number 33 killed. By that time the whole country was in a frenzy. I guess what I'm trying to say is with the first two horrific killings it seems it was acceptable without that much outrage, ho-hum just another day in the good old USA. This country likes things in mass quantities, so 31 more deaths really got everyone's interest. If the first two killed were the only shootings would the news and everyone still be talking about it? Makes me wonder.

24. I agree. People are assholes
Groups of people together become meta-assholes too. All it tiakes is for one thing that is slightly out of the ordinary, and every two-bit jerk with an axe to grind will come out of the woodwork and start ranting about a private pet peeve.

25. Pretty much
Edited on Fri Apr-20-07 11:35 AM by Marie26
People are trying to comprehend the incomprehensible. So they'll fall back on their own particular "issue" as an explanation. If it wasn't for bullying, or gun laws, or mental health care, or PC, or visas this wouldn't have happened! I've done the same thing. Any answer will do; but not having an answer means we don't know why, don't know how it could be prevented, & can't stop the same thing from happening again. Simple randomness & coincidence is terrifying - because it means life is fragile, fleeting, and easily lost. Once we find a "reason", we can gain some control over the randomness, and maybe feel like life is safe & ordered again. It isn't.

26. Agreed, except you assume reasonable, agenda-free people...
And that's clearly not the case when that utter asshole who heads the Kansas church of Our Bigoted, Misogynistic, Tax-Deductible Savior and Avenger, Inc. -- and whose name I just can't remember at the moment. You know the lizard; he's been all over the east coast leading demonstrations against the godlessness that obviously made this tragedy inevitable. And he's pretty sure the gay menace had a hand in it, too.

And then there's old reliable lard -ass himself, telling his audience of dysfunctional dull-normals that Cho must have been a liberal. Limbaugh can find a liberal plot in the excretions of a sea snail, and his obedient half-wits lap it right up and repeat it back to each other as if they had thought of it themselves -- a clear impossibility given that their combined IQ wouldn't add up to a typical winning basketball score.

The anti-gun crowd responds per script, as does the NRA. But this time we get to hear from the anti-immigrant bigots, the armchair psychiatrists and the actual president of the united states, who apparently couldn't express enough spontaneous compassion and had to read from a script. But as he says, sometimes the polls just go "Poof." Along with the last few million of his active brain cells.

Anyway, you make great points and they're probably valid for most people. It's just that the loons and hucksters and charlatans own the bully pulpit, as usual.
