Vermont Senate: Impeach the president

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Vermont senators voted Friday to call for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, saying their actions have raised "serious questions of constitutionality."

The non-binding resolution was approved 16-9 without debate — all six Republicans in the chamber at the time and three Democrats voted against it.

The resolution says Bush and Cheney's actions in the U.S. and abroad, including in Iraq, "raise serious questions of constitutionality, statutory legality, and abuse of the public trust."

"I think it's going to have a tremendous political effect, a tremendous political effect on public discourse about what to do about this president," said James Leas, a vocal advocate of withdrawing troops from Iraq and impeaching Bush and Cheney.

3. As asked yesterday and got no response: I believe congress MUST address it
I think, constitutionally, if ANY state calls for the president's impeachment, the House and/or Senate is legally obligated to bring it to the floor for discussion. Where are the resident constitutional scholars? The key here is if the is "non-binding" aspect makes a difference.

4. Smart people up there in Vermont
K&R

I believe I read somewhere that they have lost more people proportionally in the Iraq war than any other state. Not sure, but I know I was surprised when I heard this.

7. Not sure, since it's a non-binding resolution and the VT House has refused to bring it to the floor.
If it were binding and passed by both houses, it would have to go to the US House.
