Gore goes on the road with new book

Gore goes on the road with new book
For a guy who isn't running for anything, Al Gore sure knows how to lay out an agenda for his party.

First there was An Inconvenient Truth, the global-warming call to arms in film and book form. Now the former vice president is planning a national book tour in connection with the May 22 publication of The Assault On Reason.

It's being promoted as "a visionary analysis of how the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith" have created "an environment dangerously hostile to reason." Click here for more.

One stop on the Gore tour is the 92nd St. Y in Manhattan. He'll discuss the book there May 24 with PBS talk show host Charlie Rose.

And speaking of former vice presidents, Walter Mondale is coming to Washington next week. He'll talk about the role of vice presidents April 26 at the Wilson Center.

PS Bill Clinton said on Larry King Live that Gore might run and said Hillary would be fine whether she won or not. Hmmmmm.

2. Drives a Hummer (of which another DUer reported), energy bills, and this:

Now add Gore got on Apple's board of directors in 2003 and all I can say at this point is I've lost faith in what he has to say. It's the usual "Do as I say, not as I do" meandering on a politician's part.

Flame away but, I'm sorry, let's lost credibility.

"carbon credits" to justify heating a big-ass house and driving a known horrendous gas guzzler is ridiculous when he turns around and says how doing those and other things hurts the environment. If global warming is a problem, you don't do to it what you do with banks and play with credit cards. The compound interest is going to hurt.

I do know he's going solar and all that. Or so I've been told. Since he's a well known name, maybe he can use his clout and influence to make solar panels more affordable. Or drive down the cost of hybrids. Or the electric car. The oil companies can have all the patents they want and remain rich. We shouldn't have to be squeezed dry, nor do we need to be -- both sides can remain happy.

3. He drives a hybrid. And his electricity is 100% renewable.
As has been reported hundreds of times here on DU. Please don't be repeating Republican lies.

Al Gore gets approval to install solar panels at his Tennessee home
The Associated Press
Published: April 17, 2007

NASHVILLE, Tennessee: Former Vice President Al Gore's upscale neighborhood granted the environmental activist approval Tuesday to install 33 solar panels on the roof of his mansion.

Belle Meade had blocked his application until new rules were approved unanimously late Tuesday, said Gore spokesman Chris Song. The city located within metropolitan Nashville said the panels must be placed in areas where they can't be seen by neighbors.

Gore, who starred in the documentary film "An Inconvenient Truth" about global warming, already buys enough energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and methane gas to balance 100 percent of his electricity costs.

He is also upgrading the furnace, windows, and light switches, as well as installing new floor radiant heat and solar vents, to improve the home's energy standards, said Kalee Kreider, a Gore spokeswoman.<snip>

ThinkProgress reached Vice President Gore’s office for response to Hannity’s attacks. Here’s what his office told us:

– Gore lives a strict carbon-neutral lifestyle both in his work and private life. That means he tries to reduce his emissions as much as possible, and then purchases carbon offsets for the remaining emissions.

– In his private life, Gore tries to reduce his emissions as much as possible. He drives a hybrid, flies commercially whenever he can, and purchases green power. In the few instances where work has demanded that he travel privately, he purchases carbon offsets for the emissions.<snip>

6. Gore supports Cap and Trade.
Look at it like this: Say forest pulp paper costs $10, and recycled paper costs $11 for a ream of similar quality. Tree credits cost a dollar a ream, and subsidize the re-cycler's raw mats.

Now let's say Al Gore needs paper, but he can't get the recycled kind because he's in Texas. So Al Gore pays $10.00 for forest paper, and pays $2.00 in tree credits. That leaves Adam Smith in NYC able to buy two reams of recycled paper for ten dollars.

1) Did Gore use a ream of forest paper? Yes.
2) Did the $2 Tree credits, in reality, make up for the difference? Yes.
3) Does Al Gore, as a leader, use more paper than average? Yes.

The headline that comes from all this?

DRUDGE: GORE BUYS FOREST PAPER FOR PETITIONS DEMANDING E85 AVAILABILITY IN HOUSTON TX - CONSUMES 1000 TIMES MORE PAPER TO PRODUCE BROCHURES THAN AVERAGE AMERICAN
:wtf:

It's impossible to function as an American, especially as a leader, without using carbon offset or self-imposed renewable surcharge to get to neutral. Carbon trade/credits in their current state are baby steps; the impact is in the margins, the funding is a tithe. What we need is real trade and real valuation before there is enough traction to make the fundamental changes we have to make to function as a green society.

Highly Recommend: The Power of Green (NYT Friedman).

BTW: I call BS on the Gore-Hummer unless it's bio-diesel.

7. Just went to Amazon and ordered it prior to its May sales. Thanks for the alert!
To any posters looking for a good summary of the book, go to Amazon, and do a search for Al Gore and

8. Az Link

A visionary analysis of how the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith has combined with the degration of the public sphere to create an environment dangerously hostile to reason
At the time George W. Bush ordered American forces to invade Iraq, 70 percent of Americans believed Saddam Hussein was linked to 9/11. Voters in Ohio, when asked by pollsters to list what stuck in their minds about the campaign, most frequently named two Bush television ads that played to fears of terrorism.
...

The Assault on Reason

Hard to know if this is a sign. But people have short memories. They watch Gore's appearances and focus on climate, then call him "Single Issue" without bothering to google "gore transcript media" or "gore transcript iraq", or "gore transcript terror".

9. Since when does Al Gore drive a hummer?
I'm sorry, but people who post lies lose THEIR credibility when they don't get the facts straight just to further their agenda. For people like this, it is never enough to be helping the environment or be against the Iraq war from the beginning, etc. For these people, everyone is a hypocrite but them. So holier then though. Enough. I am looking forward to Al Gore's book as he is one of the few politicians (or ex-politicians) with any voice of reason left in the world today.
