Media backlash at Virginia Tech
http://abcnews.go.com/US/VATech/story?id=3059025&page=1

<snip>
The media frenzy at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., has spurred resentment among family and friends who continue to mourn for the victims of Monday's shooting.

Anti-media signs have been spotted around the campus as the relationship between the community and the media becomes increasingly strained.

Students have also been handing out a flier that reads: "We are Hokie Nation and we need to mourn and heal. We need each other. The media has taken advantage of our situation and are exploiting us for their own sensationalism. We will not tolerate the abuse; we love our community far too much to stand for this any more.

"We, the students of Virginia Tech, are asserting ourselves. We are taking back our campus. All media, if they have any respect for Hokie Nation, will no longer attack our administration. They will no longer hound our students. Leave us to heal. Leave us to ourselves. Hokie Nation needs to be UNITED. Return our campus to us."

1. I'm curious
I wonder how people would feel if this whole thing was treated as a news-blip? I too think it is over-saturation, but I also think that it is indeed an important thing to talk about.

3. Yes, it's important, but it has become ludicrous. It is no longer
about the event or the victims, it's become about the newscasters, pundits and ratings.

4. I've had enough of the media. I basically stopped watching TV.

6. My guess is that it's the oversaturation people are upset about...
...not that people are talking about it.

For me, it's not some sort of all or nothing thing.

Report it, yes. Have a few "experts" pondering the reasons how something like this can happen, sure.

But this non-stop, wall-to-wall coverage is just for ratings and appealing to people's basic instincts just to get them to watch their advertisers.

I say let the victim's families and friends mourn in peace.

2. It's the constant helicopters
I live in a town where, since I've been here, there was a child kidnapping--child never found. And a natural gas explosion (one block away--will never forget frantic calls from sister, and my daughter hugging me telling me "I thought I'd have to get a new mom."). And for several years, I could not hear a helicopter without feeling sick. And this has to be hundreds of times worse.
