cleveramerican was nearly killed by drunk driver last night.
Last night ,my dad, was broadsided coming through our town by a drunk driver and sustained serious injuries. He was on his way home from town meeting where he spoke passionately in favor of spending the money to build a new high school for my sisters and I.He has a broken back, two broken arms and a fractured skull. He was taken by helicopter to Boston where he is in intensive care. My mom says he will probably live but he is very badly hurt and needs our prayers more than ever before. His pride and joy, his Mini Cooper is completely destroyed and dad doesn't even know it yet.

He was wearing his DU tee shirt when the accident happened.

The lady who hit him was arrested for drunk driving for the 10th time. She has no license to drive, the car was a borrowed one. She killed a six year old boy in another car wreck in 1999.Now she has nearly killed my dad.

I don't want my dad to die I still need him. He has a way of explaining things that makes it all seem like it will work out okay. We talk about boys and high school and the news and he makes it all seem not so scary for me. I love him for that.

Some of you may already know, some of you may have sent over food for my family, But I wanted to try and let some of Dads friends here about what has happened. He was wearing his DU tee shirt when the accident happened.

Say a prayer for my dad. Sincerely yours, hope-to-one-day-be-a cleveramerican

And for his family that is going to have to do so much to get him well.

I'm glad they know who did it. If she is still alive I don't ever want her out of jail. She cannot be trusted around people who are moving freely.

I know your father has well earned everything all of you will do for him now. Make sure he knows it's all prepaid.

Did you know he is an expert guitar player? When he goes to the guitar store and plays one of those horrible corny, marching with the union or marching with the Irish rebels type songs he plays, guys with nose rings and Metallica tee shirts gather around and cheer loudly and clap when he finishes.I think thats pretty cool.

20. this has to be so hard for you
here in the Dallas area we've had a rash of drunks driving the wrong way down the tollway, killing and injuring people. I said to a coworker last night after reading about a public service announcemtent made with the families, I just don't know what I'd do if some drunk did that to one of my loved ones - I think the anger would just eat me up - be good to yourself

23. No you wouldn't Skittles.
You are much too smart for that.

When my brother was seriously injured and his best friend killed by a drunk driver, my dad was eaten up by anger and bitterness. My brother and I had to sit down with my dad and make him stop it. He was not the same person any more.

Anger is a part of it. But we get past it to help our loved ones and ourselves.

Picture a successful outcome. Nothing will be "normal" for a long long time... but If you can project a 4th of July picnic, with all this horror behind you, it may help you cope in the short run.

29. Wow, I'm so sorry this has happened to your Dad
I will send healing energy his way and to the rest of the family.

I do believe that the person responsible for lending this "lady" their car should also be held responsible if they knew of this woman's history of driving under the influence and killing an innocent boy. A drunk will always find a way to get behind the wheel of an automobile. It's just what they do, they can't help themselves. It is a very selfish act on their part. However, that is no excuse for their behavior. This "lady" needs to spend the rest of her life behind bars (she obviously hasn't learned anything from her previous actions), so she is no longer a threat to anyone else, .

Please keep us posted on your Father's recovery. I will hold all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

118. I actually read a study about that and it has something to do with the fact
that the drunk driver is so unaware that they have no time to tense up. Their relaxed body doesn't sustain as much damage as someone who sees it coming, tenses up and braces for the crash. Not that you can help it (if you're sober, that it). It's an instinctual reaction.

But I agree with you, it's maddening that they so often walk away from the havoc they caused.

221. in many states, like Illinois
the penalty for driving two weeks after smoking grass is worse than an alcohol dui. Why does the law say I am more of a menace sober, 3 days after doing a joint than a woman like this who has already killed someone?

on the idiot that loaned her the car. They are as liable as the driver and not only face all of that but are out a car as well. Where was that person's brain in allowing a known drinker to drive their vehicle? We seriously need to re-think the privilege to drive.

Someone who has had years of practicing manipulation and finding an unwitting enabler. Fake or invalid ID, aliases and more can be in play here.
I used to rent out used cars (like Rent-a-Wreck, but no franchise), and I've seen all this and more.

I've known several people who habitually drove while drunk and finally ended up killing other drivers.

Even after serving time, they still denied that they did anything wrong and continued to drink and drive. It's too damn easy to get back behind the wheel in a lot of states.

That POS broad that hit him was no lady, but she must be someone influential to be out drunk on the roads after killing a child and being arrested ten times already. Let's hope next time (because apparently nothing is stopping a next time from happening) she hits a tree really, really hard.

114. godspeed to your Dad...
why, on earth, is it so flippin' hard for people to call. a. cab? or a loved one?
this makes me so angry.
my husband got tipsy last weekend and slept on our friend's couch. i don't care if he does this every time he has a beer, because at least he doesn't do something incredibly stupid, like ride his bike home drunk at 4am (we don't drive when we drink, because we don't drive our cars when we're going out-not trying to preach, it's just a fact).

Child of cleveramerican (sorry, i don't know your gender), i really, really hope your dad makes a speedy recovery and i'm so sorry that you have to spend your thanksgiving like this.

Also , someone needs to make sure that this drunk woman remains behind bars for a long time. You might want to consider writing an Op-Ed piece on this to a local newspaper. Perhaps it might lead to changes in the law and/or put pressure on the next judge and DA to put this awful woman away.

for Cleveramerican, Keep us informed and I will keep CA in my thoughts and prayers. Punishment if the other driver should be harsh. I had a BIL that hit and killed a person and laughed about it then and still laughs about it. His "excuse" is that the other driver should not have been driving a compact, the dead man need to be in a 3/4 ton truck like him! I hope that your father recovers soon and justice is done.

138. happened to
me a little more than a year ago. A drunk ran a red at 60 mph, and creamed us. Nearly killed us.
Luckily, that itty bitty Escape is one of the safest SUVs built. It certainly saved our lives. But the injuries? Still continuing, with multiple serious surgeries and more. My life's partner was not breathing, as far as I could tell. When they removed her, in a coma, out of the passengerside, tied to a backboard, that was one feeling I will never, ever forget.

Please go to your dad, and tell him he has tons of support here. And we await his return.

167. I'd say you're already a cleveramerican.
Have the dad-one heal well and return refreshed and renewed.

How to stop drunk drivers is difficult. We tend to adjudicate expecting time or money to compensate for wrong actions. Fail.

Provided she ever gets out of jail, I'm thinking I'd make her pay into a cab fund. The money could be used to pay for cabs and even some return to herself for each use, or it goes to past victims. Can't be sure she won't drive again, but one can at least make it easier and more desirable to take that cab, that is rather than collecting a lot of money for yourselves -- to which you are entitled -- just to be clear.

Just thinking.

Hope all goes extremely well.

Sounds like he'll be laid up for awhile so I'll mention that George Carlin's autobiography Last Words: A Memoir arrived at book stores about 2 weeks ago. 2 broken arms will mean reading to dad, which could be a very rewarding experience for all, and/or audiobooks.

You and your father will be in my thoughts tonight and especially on thanksgiving...Mass General is the best, although most hospitals in Boston are the best...Somehow when I read your post I thought of Mass Gen, as I have spent a lot of time there myself. But perhaps my esp is not so great. Wish there was some way I could help as I am near.

198. Your Dad is filled with pride and love for you, and from you
Cleveramarican's daughter, I'm sure your dad has expressed love and pride towards you and the rest of your family. But, I guarantee, the love and pride he feels is way beyond whatever he has said to you.

You have a very clear and expressive way of communicating. Your dad's love, pride, and talents live within you, too, in your own unique way. Thank you for taking the initiative to let us know.

We are part of your extended family. You must be completely overcome by the tragedy of what's happened. You must be crushed by it.

I get so upset when I hear about worthy people who contribute, and they get destroyed by worthless people who just cause problems.

I am going to send you a private message. I'll include my email address. I am offering to buy your dad a new DU shirt. It will be part of his recovery, and a reminder of the love and care you're all receiving from your extended family here. And if anyone else in your family wants one, I'll send one for them, too.

You know all those things your dad is really good at? In your life, you'll be just as good in your own way. Believe it or not, it's true.

This is a very bad holiday period for all of you. But I think it's a time to follow your holiday customs the best you can; to pull together as a family. You need to find the strength to keep going. We will help you.

Please keep us updated on what's happening in your lives. We really care, and we want to know about it.

House? jewels? Losers like this generally have a negative net worth - even if they are from a wealthy family, any assets are in a trust, or in someone else's name - so they can't sell 'em for drinkin' money.

did that was so horribly wrong in 1999 and then last night. She shouldn't have access to a vehicle, and anyone providing her with a weapon like a car should have some liability as well. My family has dealt with an alcoholic family member, It isn't pretty, but some of them can be rehab'ed.

I hope your father pulls through with no complications. Good luck to all of you.

This is terrible news for your family. Your dad sounds like a wonderful person who certainly needs our positive thoughts and prayers at this time. Please keep us informed as to his progress, won't you? We care to know.

235. My prayers are with you, Cleveramerican and family.
As my own family was severely impacted by a drunk driver when I was a young girl, I feel your anguish in a very deep way.
