If the Democrats do not pass healthcare, they will suffer mightily in the next election? That is the political consensus? But is it true?
If the Democrats stuck with their public option and the Republicans were to defeat it, the American people could see who voted against "true" healthcare reform. Of course, the Republicans would argue that they defeated the "socialist" plan of Barack Obama and the Democrats. Even as the cost of their medicine and healthcare goes up once again. Even as millions more are without coverage. Who would actually win this argument? Certainly not the American people without coverage.
If this were to actually happen, and the Democrats managed to maintain a majority in the House and a majority in the Senate, the Democrats could bring up the healthcare reform for another vote immediately after the next election and pass it with a simple majority. The Republicans would not be able to mount the same attacks against reform after the election.
Yes, it would be postponed for a year but that may be the sacrifice we all have to make to get actual reform, with a public option. Most Democrats know that without the public option, there is really no "reform".
Let the Republicans defeat it. Blame them for the defeat. Stand up for what you believe in. Bring it up again for a vote after the election and pass it with a public option and with a simple majority. The people will have spoken if they return you to the majority after next year's election.
