Pilin' On Palin
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 01:01 AM by NanceGreggs
Being the week of the official launch of Sarah Palin’s book, it is an opportune time to step back and analyze why this woman has attracted, although not unsurprisingly, the kind of scorn usually reserved for – well, for people who can’t put two coherent sentences together, but “write” books nonetheless.

Perhaps it is simply this: Sarah Palin personifies all that is wrong with a political system that allows for anyone so obviously incompetent to rise within its ranks, a political party so devoid of circumspection it would not merely allow such a person to come within a heartbeat of the presidency, but would actively support her pursuit of same, and a citizenry so bereft of insight so as to actually encourage and applaud her political aspirations.

The evidence is more than plentiful. Palin is as ill-informed as it is possible to be in today’s environment of easily-accessible information. She is an unethical hypocrite who lacks any empathy for her fellow citizens, who has often used her political clout as a means to destroy her perceived enemies and enrich herself financially, a woman who has no qualms about reducing her own children to mere props when it is politically expedient.

There is no doubt in this writer’s mind that Palin’s rise in popularity among the intellectually impaired was a natural follow-up to the G.W. Bush years, when the road to a form of political insanity was paved – a time when abject stupidity was passed off as down home charm, ignorance of world events was accepted as a sign of being just simple folk, and stubbornness and an incapacity to admit mistakes was lauded as strength of character and commitment to whatever the most recent poll results defined as American ideals.

But Palin, unbelievably it would seem, took up the torch of Olympian stupidity and not only ran with it, but managed to go the distance – not to the White House, but undeniably far beyond the fifteen minutes of fame usually relegated to those whose every utterance results in a self-inflicted slap-to-the-head and an incredulous cry of no, really, you’ve got to be fuckin’ kiddin’ me.

Even W, in his glory days, never went so far as to proffer the ability to see Russia from one’s front porch as experience in international affairs – perhaps a testament to his handlers who knew where to draw the line of incredulity; maybe just an opportunity missed due to never having attained the true maverickitude that would allow for making such outlandish statements and expecting them to be not only believed, but embraced.

Of course, W also lacked something that Sarah has in spades – her talent for playing the role of the persecuted victim, a part that is still deemed unacceptable for those of the male persuasion. In other words, if W had been endowed with Sarah’s tits, he could have persuaded a lot more of the populace that his detractors were not merely unpatriotic observers who pointed to his ineptitude, but die-hard conspirators out to silence the very voice of reasoned democracy – and, in the doing, sought to besmirch the good name of a fair maiden deserving of more genteel treatment. Simply put, W, by virtue of his gender, couldn’t play girl (although there are some of us who think he did a damned fine job trying), while Sarah d’Arc can throw herself on the pyre of persecution at a moment’s notice, and field dress a moose on her way to the conflagration.

Palin, to her credit – or the discredit of the loyalists who cling to her – never allows anything to stand in her way: not the truth, not the facts, not current events as they play themselves out, not history as it is known to have unfolded. Saucy Sarah simply creates her own reality – replete with things that never happened, or happened to the contrary of how she spins the tale – and smiles into the camera as her small-but-idolizing group of fans swoon to her rendition not of how things were or are, but how they are perceived in her own narrow little world.

Make no mistake. I come to bury Palin, not to praise her – nor even suggest that she deserves a modicum of sympathy or a minute’s respite from the well-deserved pilin’ on she is being subjected to.

As the personification of a political image created by half-truths and out-and-out lies, coupled with creative embellishment of questionable skills and accomplishments and ignorance that is not only blissful but a source of blatant pride – all neatly packaged in smoke-and-mirrors, a party-funded wardrobe, and presented to the world as the real deal – Sarah has come to represent all that is abhorrent in today’s political landscape, and deserves to be treated accordingly.

However, there is something truly pitiable about a woman whose claims-to-fame are, in the greater scheme of things, unremarkable at best – and, at worst, completely fabricated out of whole cloth. To hear her minions tell it, Sarah is the only woman to have given birth to a special-needs child, to have “dealt with” a teen-aged daughter’s pregnancy, to have smilingly survived the slings-and-arrows of a media that had the audacity to actually ask questions and expect a few answers.

To me, Sarah Palin is that guest at a dinner party who was invited only to balance the seating arrangements when it was realized that the party was one female short, and somehow convinced herself that she was wanted – that she was included because of her scintillating personality, her legendary wit, and her talent for initiating intelligent conversation.

Unfortunately for Sarah, she took these “truths” about herself to be self-evident, while the rest of the country, and the world, saw her for what she was – a shallow, vain, inept opportunist too wrapped up in her own ego to notice that she’d served her purpose the minute she accepted the GOP vice presidential nomination as the proud owner of a vagina – no further credentials necessary.

However, life being as full of irony as it often is, Sarah went on to become much more than the dumb broad from central casting, who played her role and caught the next train for her hometown, scrapbook in hand, ensconced in memories of a short-lived but much publicized cinematic career. She is now the face of everything the Republican Party wants us to forget its association with: right-wing religious extremists, lying hypocrites, ignorant-and-proud-of-it spokespeople who so obviously have less than nothing to say.

And.Now.She.Has.A.Book. And the media is eating it up with all the fervour reserved for other stories of equal substance – like an alleged boy allegedly set aloft in an alleged balloon.

All of this being said, I just want to add: “Congratulations on your new book, Sarah!”

I stand in awe of your ability to make a faux-silk, knock-off ‘designer’ purse out of the proverbial sow’s ear – and I applaud your contribution to the success of the Party – not yours, but mine.

You betcha!

3. Quite accurate analysis of Palin, and well-done, as always.
But you know, about that Palin book, if you were to read only one book this year, and were a major Sarah Palin fan....

But I repeat myself.

Her fans like her because she doesn't mind publically grinding her axes. When caught out in a "mis-statement of fact"--she never apologizes. She's sparkly and seems to have a super-power of drawing attention to herself. And she does it all backasswards and in high heels. It's....breath-taking. Even scary.

this book is going to be the next big 'unwanted item of the year' at citywide (and otherwise) yard sales. It will go down in history next to the Thigh Master, Westbend red electric woks, treadmills and anything country blue. Although, I still seek like new red woks even though it was the item of the year at least 10 years ago.

My friend and I usually try to collect 'the item of the year' when reasonably priced (less than $1, although I'd give almost anything for another red wok).

I have until mid-summer next year to decide what to do with my upcoming collection. Maybe I'll take another road trip to Alaska and dump them on her doorstep.

Did I mention I like those red electric woks?

19. Prepare for the rise of the idjits (again)
My Tragic 8-Ball predicts another, stronger, rise of good ol' homespun idjits who will "take back their country" and give it back to the greed-political complex. The sellers of the current and soon-to-be-manufactured political snake oil are grabbing the spotlight now and beginning to pitch their medicine.

As the article said, "As the personification of a political image created by half-truths and out-and-out lies, coupled with creative embellishment of questionable skills and accomplishments and ignorance that is not only blissful but a source of blatant pride – all neatly packaged in smoke-and-mirrors, a party-funded wardrobe, and presented to the world as the real deal – Sarah has come to represent all that is abhorrent in today’s political landscape, and deserves to be treated accordingly."

The Tragic 8-Ball predicts, though, she will be astonishingly successful in rousing the rabble to yell louder while disrupting town hall meetings, to plaster their SUVs with anti-progressive stickers, and to vote for those who'll take advantage of them once again.

Though she cited Russia's close proximity to Alaska as foreign policy experience and that they were "next door neighbors." The line "I can see Russia from my house" actually came from Tina Fey. It was an excellent spoof, because so many DO believe that Palin DID say it.

30. The utter beauty of the Tina Fey response
When Sarah was foisted upon America, the catapulting of the propaganda began when every show had someone ask, "But what about her lack of foreign experience?" and the answer was always -- ALWAYS -- "But of course Alaska is right next to Russia and she's had to deal with THAT every day of her governorship." It was said often enough that her followers started accepting this totally irrelevant factoid as some sort of cred on her part, despite how often I'd yell at the TV. Tina Fey's line exposed that as the complete banality it was.

And remember, it was Sarah who used the line about Putin rearing his head up over Alaska.

59. And to be fair ...
... I didn't attribute the quote to her, but the concept - which she promoted many times - that governing a state with close proximity to Russia somehow constituted experience in international affairs.

While Tina Fey and the SNL writers were brilliant in capturing the essence of Sarah's lunacy, the fact remains that their creative dialogue was no less ludicrous than her own statements, or indeed the woman herself.

27. The problem isn't Palin or the ratings crazy media that can't
get enough of her. The problem is we (Americans) have so little faith in our politicians and the "process", even scorn and hatred for professional politicians, that we will accept a joke as a "leader", a sick joke at that. Don't be too sure she will add to the "success" of the Democratic party. I'm sure you are aware that the rethug propensity to have "winner take all" primaries means that in a multi candidate election she would need only about 35% of the vote to secure the nomination, a number easily reached with the fundie right and the just plain stupid. That she could get the necessary number of votes in the electoral college is a question I would not like to see answered.

there's no way she could get the election on the 20%. Even with the vaunted republican solidarity, she would not get over 40% in the general election. Her only chance would be if there was a spoiler who divided the dems.

35. Wow, Nance, I am totally in awe of how you consistently are
able to articulate my own sentiments but so much more gracefully and cogently than I ever can! "Rantastic" is right!

"... Sarah has come to represent all that is abhorrent in today’s political landscape, and deserves to be treated accordingly."

Spot on!

But I wish I had. Kudos Nance, for putting this two-bit grifter into perspective as only you can.

No offense to two-bits.

38. Incredibly well put!!!!
Nancy, you have this amazing way of putting exactly how I feel about this woman so eloquently and succinctly in to words. I couldn't even BEGIN to write this rant but it states exactly how I feel about Sarah Palin. It's brilliant!

Thank you!!!

41. We do such a good job obsessing with non-entities like Palin..
that we don't even need the Republicans or media to do it for us. This person, that half of DU's stories are about on any given day, is the same person that we ourselves admitted was a terrible candidate and the downfall of McSame's campaign. And yet we are still so scared of her. What is about these female candidates like Hillary and Palin that we can never just move on?

53. hillary and sarah shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence.
imho. other than both being female, sarah has nothing of hillary's experience, skill, intelligence, or appeal.

that will eventually put her back where she belongs, into obscurity.
Your slap is way better than most, using wit and insight and just the right cuts with the scalpel.
Congrats on a masterpiece.

I based this entire OP on SNL skits!

We all know that in real life, Sarah Palin is articulate, intelligent, well-read, a gifted politician and a brilliant author - not to mention being well-infromed.

55. Of course, here is where I get pilloried
There is one "elephant" in the room that we will not like to look at, and that is that there is no way people like her or W. would have come into power if we on the left were not engaged in a constant civil war. W. got into office because our civil war on the left made it possible (yeah yeah, keep your Nader in 2000 souvenirs guys, even Michael Moore admitted supporting Nader was a mistake) and of course, Sarah Palin was a blatant attempt to woo the P.U.M.A s To their credit, many did not take the bait, but there was enough sympathy for her so that a person with less education than many FOX news anchors could gain her 15 minutes of shame.

And if you think the GOP is not ready to exploit us again, you are wrong. They hear all of you saying that someone like Hillary or Dennis should run in 2012, and they know that would be perfect for someone like Palin. To those who would say that the powers that be cannot cook a vote for her, I will quote a fellow poster: I do not have one words for you, just a letter: W! I will add that what W. Started, Palin would finish, as it would be the third and fourth presidential term of Dick Cheney.

to believe such a little dirt ball could ever get that close, let alone be elevated to the office. When the repukes nominated him, I know they had no respect for the office or democracy.

62. Thinking about why I can't stand her so much
and why so many others feel this way. I think its because she flaunts stupid as if its a good thing and something to be proud of. It's like she is saying to millions of housewives that love her, its okay you can watch soap operas all day and read the enquirer and go to church and be president. That is all it takes.

Being upset because she was asked what she reads. Because she knew Katie was trying to say she wasn't up on things, so prove her wrong...but no she proved Katie right by having no answer.

I think it's that beauty pageant mentality carried over from adolescence. It says a lot about people like Palin who crave constant attention from the media, and then whine when they get it.

We won't be rid of her for a long, long time...

78. The McCain camp put her on center stage. The Media are keeping her there. Every network,
every radio news broadcast, every website--liberal or conservative, every newspaper, every magazine is giving this twit the exposure that keeps her in front of our faces day and night.

Yesterday I had to turn off the Ed Schultz radio show because he insisted on having an entire segment dedicated to "whether he should cover Sarah Palin". That is pure bullshit that, as you point out, is right in line with the "balloon-boy" manufactured news cycle. This is a form of corporate marketing that is being foisted upon Americans as "news". The purpose is to continue to dumb down our expectations of people who are considered (only by some on the far right) to be legitimate political aspirants when in reality they are charlatans or media constructs.

The fact that this woman garners so much of our attention is a NATIONAL DISGRACE.

Then next time one of my conservative friends dares to defend this despicable excuse for a human being, I am going to send them a copy of your OP, Nance. It is perfect.

Rec.
