Turkey mulls 'invading' Iraq - from AlJazeera's English language service

Turkey considers the PKK a terrorist group and continues to fight it in the southeast

Turkey's parliament went into secret session this week to debate sending troops to invade and occupy northern Iraq for security purposes.

Onur Oymen, the deputy chairman of the Opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), said: "Northern Iraq is the only place in the world where a terrorist group can operate without being pursued."

"If the Iraqis and the US are not prepared to take action over this, then we must."

...

The PKK have bases around Kandili mountain in northern Iraq, and despite requests from Turkey for Iraqi and US occupation forces to attack these bases, Turkey says nothing has been done.

"The US are doing nothing and the Kurdish authorities are doing nothing," Oymen said.

"But we have the right to secure our borders – and if they act against an intervention by Turkish troops, then we must take the necessary action in response."

The article continues, soliciting opinios from diplomats, politicians and businessmen frm the region as well as providing some background to the fractious relationship between Turks and Kurds.

4. I tend to think that
the turks are smarter than this. There have been how many stories in the last 3 years about the imminent Turkish invasion of Northern Iraq??? It sounds like Arab fear mongering as they don't like the Turks any more than the Kurds do. Try a neat experiment, see how many positive articles Al Jazeera posts about the Turks.......it ain't a lot.......

6. And the irony would be...
"But we have the right to secure our borders – and if they act against an intervention by Turkish troops, then we must take the necessary action in response."

...that Turkey would be using the exact same rationale as we did for our preemptive invasion -- a rationale that was regarded as an unquestionable breach of the standards of modern civilization until we did it four years ago. :grr:

8. They certainly would have far more justification than we did.
There actually are terrorists there, and they actually have been striking at targets in Turkey.
