A clue re melamine in pet food
"The Las Vegas importer of the contaminated Chinese wheat gluten, ChemNutra Inc., that led to the original pet food recall has suggested that spiking a product with melamine can make it to appear to be richer in protein during tests, thus increasing its value."

1. protein testing was noted day one of the melamine cause being noted - the AP
took a long time to get corporate America/Canada's permission to report on the fact, but that is to be expected of that right wing biased "wire service".

3. that is the first thing I thought I when I heard about it
I can just see ChemNutra marketing its brand of gluten saying that it is higher in protein and it is all natural.

They made a point of saying that the product is shipped to ChemNutra and then shipped out by ChemNutra in the same packaging - suggesting that ChemNutra is not repackaging (ie adding special ingredients). You have to wonder though if they knew about the increased protein levels and asked why.

6. I'm very disappointed in Natural Balance
Turns out my vet wasn't being alarmist as I thought when he said he wouldn't feed ANY canned food at this point. Natural Balance products containing rice protein concentrate have been recalled as of April 17th for possible melamine contamination:

"The recalled products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food."

http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/press_release.html

Which means even they -- supposedly a quality, natural alternative -- are using cheap and/or GM products in their food.

I switched to Natural Balance thinking they were reliable. My dogs had at least one can of the venison and brown rice over the last two weeks. They're now on totally homemade, I won't even feed them kibble anymore. Screw the money-grubbing corporations.
