I mean it's a big deal but there are too many questions unanswered at this stage. We don't know this guys motivations or if he was part of any sort of plot.

People may well try to use him in that way - the Right to push him to more militarism, the Left to encourage him to look at stop loss measures and the like. But I don't know if this particular tragedy has legs.

No. I do not believe that this incident is, in any way, equivalent to 9/11 in the same way that it would probably be equivalent to, say, Columbine. Serious, yes. Tragic, yes. However, all we know at the moment is that some disturbed lone individual went on a homicidal rampage and was likely NOT part of a larger plot/conspiracy to murder Americans.
