Let us chill on some of the speculation

This is what we know, the man was a psychiatrist in the military.

The man made it through medical school. From there he made it to Psychiatric school. From there he did a residency. From there he practiced psychiatry in the military for years.

He was just promoted in May and was concerned about being deployed.

This doesn't sound like a man who had years of problems, so we shouldn't speculate too much.

People sometimes snap and do horrible things with little or no explanation.

And I seriously doubt there was any conspiracy with anyone else? I would be surprised.

2. I think when something like this happens

People want to know what made the person do it right away, because they desperately want to know that they're different from them. They hop on different sounding names, skin tones, religions, jobs, marital status, etc. Anything to make sure he's not like us, because if he is he's not just some monster, he's a person and we have to confront things about our society and maybe ourselves.

3. He's likely listened to hundreds of soldiers

expressing their fear and horror over what they've had to do and what they've seen.

He likely had their tales inhabit his dreams (nightmares).

The guy LOST IT.

He may have been well educated and brilliant - but there is only so much horror that can be digested.

4. Remember Charles Whitman?

The autopsy revealed a brain tumor. While we still don't know why Whitman did it, it's plausible he wasn't driven by an agenda, or a need for vengeance, or any other human condition we recognize, but by madness induced by his physical condition. It'd take some pretty free ranging speculation to anticipate that development.

Which means he was interested in doing something more (or other than) hands on psychiatry. Typically, one gets that degree to run programs or do advanced research.

6. If I had listened day and day out to horrible tales from returning solidiers

and then you wanted me to go to the war front - I would have had a difficult time - someone did mentioned he could have just said he was gay and gotten out - although clinger tried that for years and it did not help

we know that a supervising officer claims that he said that the iraqis should fight back against the americans

we know that he is being investigated by the FBI for internet posts supporting suicide bombers

Let's try to be slightly fair here.

Speculation was all over until it was discovered that he was not a wingnut. Now speculation is wrong?
