Media
Anyone else sick and tired of all the coverage of the virginia shootings? This should be a local
story.I can see CNN,and MSNBC reporting on It right after It happened but on the third day continuing all day coverage of It Is crazy.Just like all those reports they were doing on Anna
Nicole Smith.I mean they had live coverage of court hearings on MSNBC.There Is stuff going on in the 49 other states. We have war going on In Iraq.More people are dying because of Bush, and Cheney's
lies that those killed In Virginia.Let's get back to more Important stuff. Now I am sorry for the familys of those killed but the Corporate Tabloid Media's coverage IS too much.Last night ABC aired
Dancing with the Stars but preempted Boston Legal to air primetime Live(although If you watch Boston Legal you can see why ABC would be quick to preempt It)

2. You cannot compare this to Anna Nicole Smith.
I think the a killer's rampage that kill's 32 people at one of America's University's is extremely important. And for you to compare this to ANS is shameful.

3. The comparison is fine
The comparison involves the OP's opinion about over-the-top, unneeded media coverage common to the two incidents, not the severity of the two incidents.

4. Coverage
I meant to compare this to Anna Nicole Smith on the endless coverage that IS unnecsarry not to have
It compared on the uselessness on It.This Is more a legitmate reason than with her death and all the who the daddy coverage.I still say they are going way overboard on it,and Ignoring so much else.

6. Actually, it wasn't such a bad article.
This guy didn't blame the VTers for how they acted. Nor did he suggest arming people to the teeth. He simply suggested "assertiveness training"--not all that different from what women take to help fend off potential rapists.

I saw nothing in his quotes (aside from the "we're too politically correct" thing) that was much different from how the average person would probably act now on a plane if someone caused a disruption. In the post-9/11 world, I think the passengers get on planes with a new attitude: "If anyone on this thing is planning to cause trouble, dammit, we as the passengers will act."

Actually, this man suggested that running and escaping are perfectly legitimate reactions to dealing with a gunman in this situation. He didn't suggest that there should have been a shootout at the OK Corral.

8. No I'm saying he's promoting his private agenda
Yes, people should be aware of what's going on around them. And they should be taught how to escape from threatening situations.

But "training as hard" as bad guys? Sounds like he's trying to push his security service as the answer to school violence.

9. I read the piece again...he is not quoted as pushing his company,
the name was mentioned by the author of the article. In any case, what he said was 100% accurate.

10. 33 dead is not a local story.
Two or three, sure, but that number is far too great to be confined to even regional news.

11. When It's Not Your Agenda, It's Not Important
I actually think the coverage of this tragedy has been better than past ones...especially Columbine. One may remember the constant running of the tapes of the horrified students running and the student being dropped from the window being shown endlessly. The cable networks have the neverending problem of having lots of airtime and little news and go off into speculationland...that's when I turn it off.
