Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,

I know of* no reason

Why the Gunpowder Treason

Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent

To blow up the King and Parli'ment.

Three-score barrels of powder below

To prove old England's overthrow;

By God's providence he was catch'd (or by God's mercy*)

With a dark lantern and burning match.

Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring. (Holla*)

Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

6. Fireworks have been going off for the past week according to my mother
We used to build gigantic bonfires when I was a kid. The whole street would hoard old wood and rubbish for months, then the pile would be made on a piece of waste ground - plenty of those just after WWII - bomb sites etc. The bonfires would burn for hours, we lived near the railway tracks and had oil-soaked railway ties to burn!, people would bring out fireworks, gingerbread, and would roast potatoes in the embers. Young boys would chase girls with the dreaded 'Jumping Jacks' - fireworks that banged and jumped a few feet along the ground and keep on doing it. And yes - we would toss a 'Guy' on the top of the burning pile. A stuffed Guy Fawkes effigy.
Very Wicker Man!
Good times.
