WA State will make history if, as expected, its civil partnership referendum passes.
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 10:54 PM by pnwmom
On election night it was passing, but not all the votes were counted yet ( it's a mail-in election).

Every other state that has a civil partnership or gay marriage law got it through a legislative vote or a judicial decision. If Washington's measure passes, it will be the first such act ever passed by a vote of the people.

(The delicious irony is that the only reason it is on the ballot is that the bigots weren't happy that the legislature approved these rights last spring -- so they filed a petition that required a vote of the people. Hopefully, this is about to blow up in their faces.)

1. we rule
i like this state.

i think the measure will pass

also,
we have a strong state constitution in regards to privacy. we actually have a right to privacy explicit in our constitution

we have a strong right to keep and bear arms, again thanks to our state constitution (and state law).

no income tax

canada is right next door

what's NOT to like?

4. Well, that and the fact that only 8 counties in this state actually voted for 71
I expected the usual Freeper Bullshit east of the mountains. But Tacoma & Vancouver, for fucks sake??

5. 1/3 of Washingtonians live in King County alone.

I bet more than half of WA staters live in the 8 counties you mention.

Tacoma and Vancouver have never been as liberal -- that's not a big surprise, is it?

But the freeper argument is weak. The bottom line is whether it passes or not, not how the vote is spread out among the counties. Who cares whether the yes votes came from Bellevue or Spokane?

7. Oh, there's no doubt that most of the population is in the Puget sound region.
But even the "good" counties have a lot of Freepazoids. Whatcom county is really goddamn scary outside of Bellingham itself. And Glenn BecKKK is from Skagit county, nuff said there. Not sure where the good voters came from there, but I'll take 'em.

The ones that were a positive surprise had to be Clallam and Jefferson. The Olympic Peninsula (apart from Port Townsend maybe) isn't exactly what I'd call as bastion of Liberalism.

8. Port Townsend is liberal enough for the whole peninsula,
based on the people there I know.

:)

10. Great town
Used to go there to buy all my concert tickets from Quimper Sound (before Ticketbastard went online). Got some great seats that way (always at the front of the line)

3. We don't have our healthcare system straightened out yet.
Though I believe the legislature is working on that. :)

Hopefully the Kucinich amendment to explicitly allow states to adopt single-payer systems is reinserted into the House bill.

Also, Tim Eyman's not to like, but his BS blew up in his face even more than the bigot initiative (hopefully) did.

6. Go open minds
I really hope it keeps passing there is only a 2 point lead last I checked that is not much. I would hate to see it fail because of the actions of the closed minded people who have no stake in who it is for.
