Exit poll: In Virginia, it's all about the economy

(CNN) - The economy and jobs are the number on issue on the minds of voters in Virginia, according to data from CNN exit polls Tuesday.

Forty-six percent of Virginian voting Tuesday, as Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds faced off for the governor's mansion, say that the economy and jobs are the most important issue to their vote. One in four indicate that health care reform is their most pressing issue, 14 percent said taxes were upmost on their minds, and 8 percent suggest that transportation woes were most pressing.

"The economy as the number one issue probably bodes well for the Republicans in Virginia," says CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley.

Those questioned in exit polls were asked their opinions after they voted, as they departed polling stations.

1. Why are NJ property taxes so high? Are their benefits so much better
than other States? What are they spencing all that money on? I know they've been extremely high for many years but I never heard why.

3. Good question - a lot of people who work in NJ choose to live in PA because of those taxes. nt

8. Most property taxess are based on the value of one's home.
And that is what's happened in NJ. It used to be a less expensive alternative to living in NY. A lot of folks moved there, demand for houses goes up and so do the prices.

I'm no expert on what's gone down in NJ -- maybe Corzine raised them, but it's usually municipalities that deal with property tax rates, so I don't really get it. I think maybe the people of NJ want what the people of CA did 30 years ago -- put a cap on rates -- but it's been a disaster in CA and that may be why he was opposed to it.

2. A majority of voting Virginians must be insane- or have some sort of death wish
if they believe Republican policies will do anything more than impoverish them further....

5. How exactly is voting repuke going to help Virginia's economy?
Maybe they think electing a Pat Robertson protege will cause God to shower them with tons and tons of gold and diamonds. :eyes:

7. mcdonnell has had a lot of pie-in-the-sky talk
about attracting a wealth of new jobs and industry to the state (as if it were as simple as snapping his fingers), and more importantly about new roads to ease some of the gridlock... of course people lapped it up without actually asking who is going to pay for these magic roads in a state with a forecasted budget shortfall of at least 1 billion next year...and both candidates during the race never even uttered the three-letter "T"-word knowing it is political death in a state that wants everything without having to pay for it...

9. I actually think the boters hate Corzine because he's from Wall Street.
That's sure not a very popular place these days and Corzine made all his money there. I suspect you'll see a switch back to a Dem in the next election there because there's very little a Governor can do to improve unemployment or reduce property taxes. Voters will keep searching for the silver bullet!

6. If they really cared about jobs
One of the Virginia governor candidates should have offered a public jobs program.

10. And, as usual, a majority of voters don't know what they hell they're voting for.
How quickly they forget that it's REPUBLICAN economic policies that got us into this mess.

Instead of thinking, they just lash out at incumbents. Sometimes this works in Dems favor too, of course, but in the end an uneducated electorate is a loss for our country.

13. Yep sorry for VA
A Regent educated Republican? Ugh. Good luck :(

Not surprised at the results though because data shows younger voters and minority voters simply didn't turn out well while older white voters had a solid representation.
