Wow. Have you seen this ad (healthcare) yet?
I have NO idea who the group "American's for Stable Quality Care" is. Some of their endorsers worry me with respect to whose side they're on.

But the ad is powerful. Almost as powerful as those Sarah McLaughlin animal rights ads.

The video is posted at the link above. This is NOT a rick roll.

1. Yes - More about the group - Americans for Stable Quality Care
More here...
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/slipslidingaway/160

"...Back story

This everything-but-the-kitchen-sink coalition includes unlikely bedfellows: the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the American Medical Association, Families USA (a consumer-advocacy group), the Federation of American Hospitals, and the Service Employees International Union, representing health-care and other workers. The campaign is bankrolled largely by PhRMA, which opposed health-care reform during the Clinton presidency but has agreed to work with the Obama White House to cut drug costs by $80 billion, presumably in return for provisions favorable to the industry. It doesn't address the hotly debated public-insurance option..."

2. I saw it yesterday. Made me tear up.
Very effective ad because it portrays a real life situation. Reminded me of what could happen to my parents if one of them got seriously ill.

3. NAMI is one of the supporters, I see.
The ad ran last night.
I saw it, it stopped me in my tracks.
I only watched 3 shows on tv last night, it was run on one of them: KO, Rachel, or Daily.

4. Remember when Obama made a deal with big pharma? Their half of the deal was to spend
x amount on advertising to promote Obama's plan. I'm guessing that is exactly what this is. They got some other orgs to sign on and make a "coalition". not knocking the ad. just remembering the deal that was made. Their support is to be in the form of paid advertising.

5. Your analogy is very accurate...and I can understand your hesitation.
The words seem good, and some of the sources are good, but when Bio and Pharma are involved..and the AMA..it is difficult not to question the underlying motives.

6. Consensus health care reform, with CONSENSUS being the operative word.
It looks like a little astroturf being spread by the crowd that has backed Baucus and left out the other side in this debate, namely those who want Medicare for all. SInce they are quoting Sibelius a DLCer, welcome to the right wing of the Democratic Party. For us on the liberal side, they might as well be Republicans. I didn't search the site that much, but I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Lieberman pops up somewhere.

7. Probably the most powerful ad produced on the subject.
It makes you watch because no words are spoken.

It shows a day in the life of a guy we all hope we never have to experience, but far too many have.

9. I think it's deceptive. I would want more information on why that couple,
who looks like they are Medicare aged and also could have other safety nets are losing everything as the ad implies. It would be more truthful with a younger couple with children, who get hit with this.

13. The couple looks a bit young for Medicare to me. And perhaps that's the point.
You could lose everything 2 years before you're eligible.

Don't know why no kids were shown, perhaps they felt that would be over the top.

At any rate, I didn't see it as deceptive at all. Not all couples have children.

17. It's a very clever ad and it has fooled many right here on DU.
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 04:36 PM by Cleita
Read the principles statement. Everything is framed in affordability of health care not access to health care, which is what we need and which every industrial nation in this planet offers it's citizens except this one. Astroturf is astroturf even if it's from our side, the DLC side of our BIG tent.

Coalition Principles

Our coalition is dedicated to generating support for health care reform based on four principles. We believe any reform proposal must offer Americans:

STABLE COVERAGE FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY HAVE IT

No denials of coverage because of pre-existing conditions or medical history
An annual cap on deductibles and out-of-pocket costs
No yearly or lifetime limits on coverage
Coverage, without charge, for preventive care like mammograms, exams for diabetics and colonoscopies
New steps to prevent gender discrimination and to extend coverage for young adults
Guaranteed coverage and renewal even if you get sick for those who pay their premiums

ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, QUALITY CARE FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT

Tax credits to small businesses to help them provide health care coverage to their employees and to individuals to help them buy insurance
An "exchange" where individuals and businesses can shop for policies, compare choices and buy insurance
Lower costs for all Americans by reducing the burden of uncompensated care on our health care system

A STRONGER MEDICARE FOR RECIPIENT TODAY AND TOMORROW

Maintained and improved benefits for current recipients
Lower prescription costs for seniors who reach the so-called "donut hole"
Investment in Medicare's future by strengthening the Medicare Trust Fund
Prevented waste by giving Medicare new tools to increase accountability

A REDUCED BURDEN ON OUR ECONOMY

Cost control for families, business and state and federal governments
No increase in the deficit

http://www.stablequalitycare.org/about-us-our-principles.shtml

This one take reading between the lines but it's clearly meant to get everyone to back the watered down plans being offered now. Tax credits, exchanges, no burden on the economy are RW ideals. They stopped short of the medical savings accounts but I'm sure that's coming. Quite honestly it reads like Bush's health plan on his website during the 2004 election although I'm sure Bush never read it himself.

18. Read my post #17 and maybe some DUer saved the Bush health plan from
his campaign website from 2004. It suddenly struck me reading the principles page that the Baucus plan is almost identical to the Bush plan that the insurance companies and Big PhRMA worked up for him and this is a support of that plan.

I see this being part of the final push to slam those fucker Republicans into a wall and tell them to STFU while we run the country and get things done.

Add ... I cannot even watch it... it shrinks my heart in pain and bring tears to my eyes ... very effective ... hope the frigging legislators see it and come up with legitimate meaningful health reform... As of now, I am very, very disappointed with the House bill...have I wasted my energy in demonstrations in support of meaningful health reform? Have I wasted the $$ here and there for orgs. supporting health reform ads? I am 79 yrs. old and do not appreciate what the House has come up with.

(i'm not in a position to watch it right now).

If so then yes it is very powerful. I was getting ready for work this morning and heard about 10 seconds of that music and had to stop & watch it.

21. Doesn't matter who is behind it. At this point the bills are out there.
This pushes support for the bills.

That's a good thing.

It doesn't have to be any more complicated than this.
