Bush’s interrogators used ‘abdominal slaps’ to ‘instill fear and despair’

By Larisa Alexandrovna

Bushs interrogators used abdominal slaps to instill fear and despairRecently declassified documents on the Bush administration interrogation program describe several techniques used on detainees in US custody, some of which may have violated the United Nations Convention Against Torture, to which the United States is a signatory.

Included in the large cache of documents is one which describes (pdf) stress positions to be used as interrogation techniques, as well as the use of an abdominal slap as a punishment tool.

The documents were requested by the American Civil Liberties Union via a Freedom of Information Act request in 2004 and were made public on October 30, 2009.

While there is no information on when the stress-position document was written or which government agency authored it, the entire cache of documents was in the possession of the Office of Legal Council at the US Department of Justice according to ACLU attorney, Alex Abdo. "We don't know who wrote it," Abdo said in a Monday interview. "It may have been written by the OLC, the CIA, or the DOD."

2. Yes, I've been on both the giving & the receiving end of them

I stopped participating after a friend suffered a hernia during a pink-belly session. The hernia may have been ready to open already, but the pink belly - and his struggle - definitely contributed.

8. This is very different from your reaction to alleged abuse under Obama, isn't it?
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 10:44 AM by No Elephants
I don't recall your joking about the former.

Even though you are a Democrat, you judge Obama more harshly than Bush. Let me guess: you put aside your Party sympathies to hold Obama to a much higher standard. You are not a man of partisanship but of principle.

Did I guess right, er, I mean, correctly?

9. So joking about it is judging more harshly?
Interesting. Pink bellies are a far cry from waterboarding.

6. There was an urban legend in our HS that a kid had died from a pink belly
The slaps had supposedly caused his appendix to rupture and he died from peritonitis. Apparently everything in the story was true. He got a pink belly, then his appendix burst and he died. Only problem was the death occurred like two months after the pink belly.
