Chris Matthews suggests that Joe Lieberman might not actually be a Democrat.
Could there be some truth to this? Hmm...

4. Apparently a lot of people here expected him to act like a Democrat.
Joe Lieberman is Joe Lieberman and a party unto himself.

5. If he wants to
keep his Committee Chairmanship of a Democratic caucus then it might be a good idea to act like a Democrat once in a while.

I want him stripped of his chairmanship but I suspect Harry Reid will wimp out and let him stay.

At some point there have got to be some consequences to what he does.

12. Remember nearly a year ago with Lieberman, how did that work out?
You know: "Joe Lieberman To Be Stripped Of Committee Chair?"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/06/joe-lieberman-to-be-strip_n_141730.html

And who came to support him then? "Senior senator renews support for Lieberman":
http://www.middletownpress.com/articles/2008/11/15/news/doc491f8e653fdfd575088945.txt

So if Lieberman was not stripped of his chairmanship for supporting McCain over Obama, will it happen if he does not vote for cloture? Especially if any other actual Democratic senator also does not vote for cloture?

What we want and what actually happens are not always the same thing.

19. I honestly don't know WHAT he is
Edited on Sat Oct-31-09 11:57 AM by Proud Liberal Dem
He USED to be a Democrat but it seems like he's drifted rightward since Bush started his "war on terror", invaded Iraq, and and became a huge booster of Israel. Then, of course he lost the Democratic nomination in 2006, largely due to his support of Bushco's Iraq invasion/occupation, but ran and won as an "independent"- promising to caucus with the Democrats and vote with us on most issues. Then Liberman decided to campaign for buddy, McSame, last year (including speaking at the RNC) AGAINST Obama but was, amazingly, allowed to retain his chairmanship in the new Congress. Now, he's bucking President Obama on health care reform if it includes a PO and talking about possibly campaigning for some Republicans next year, so.............? I thought that maybe there was some hidden deal Obama and/or Reid made with Lieberman to allow him to retain his chairmanship but he doesn't seem to feel any pressure/leverage to help us out on health care reform (with a PO anyway) in the Senate right now. In fact, it seems like he's threatening to sink the whole boat if necessary. I'm wondering what Obama and Reid must be thinking about him now? Have they made any comments about his recent "declarations"? Do they have some other cards to play against Lieberman or were they simply bushwacked by him? Hopefully, reconciliation remains an option for getting a PO into the final legislation.
