Key public option supporters in the Senate Democratic Caucus pushed back today on different objections raised by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) to the idea of including a public option in health care reform.
"I think one of the problems the leader is working through...is that there have been a number of theories about what a public option is that have been kicked around," said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) in response to a question from TPMDC. "On the Senate side, in the
Committee, we chose to...make sure that these public options were self sustaining."
Lieberman has suggested both that the public option would be a drain on taxpayers, and that it would drive up private insurance premiums, in contrast to the findings of most experts.
And here is a example of him doing it just yesterday

Sen. Joe Lieberman, an Independent Democrat, says he's opposed to a government-backed health insurance plan because it would drive up costs for taxpayers.

Sen. Joe Lieberman reaffirmed his pledge Wednesday to withhold his vote for the Senate's sweeping health care reform bill if it includes a so-called "public option," saying a government-run plan is "unnecessary" and threatens to drive up costs for taxpayers.
"It's not free," the Connecticut senator told Fox News on Wednesday.

"Someone's going to have to pay for it and you bet it's going to be the taxpayer," Lieberman said, adding that a government-run insurance plan will drive up premiums -- despite claims from some Democrats that it would lead to an improved system because it will create healthy competition.
The good news is that the Fox article says he will vote with Democrats to bring the bill forward for debate but will not vote for cloture. I know there was a lot of concern that he would attempt to block it even coming up for debate.
