I can't stand that juice drinks and soda woman or those idiotic
commercials.

Does anyone really fall for that crap?

Seriously. If you can't afford a couple cents tax on a bottle of soda, there's this neat thing in your kitchen - you turn the faucet and water comes out. Drink it.

1. Don't they call themselves "The Coalition for Food Choice Freedom" or something equally euphemistic?
Yes, indeed. Nothing says "food" like 12 teaspoons of sugar in carmel-colored water.

7. Right. "Tough times, I can't feed my family, so I just spent
$4 on a package of sugar water. And it will break the bank if I spend $4.10 on it!"

Stupid. Just plain stupid.

These people are kooky.

2. I feel the same way
That stuff is totally discretionary. The ad seems to imply that soda and fake juice is a necessary part of any family's diet.

6. The way they connect fizzy sugar water with food and family values is hilarious.
...and they are so Earnest! Over 5 measly cents on a friggin 2 Litre. Hate to see their reaction if they brought back the per bottle deposit.

11. They are sponsored by Coke and Pepsi
I have heard it from a friend that Coke and Pepsi are scared sales will fall if there is a tax, plus they are afraid that their product will become like tobacco as a favorite source of revenue in the form of punative taxes.

13. You know, I love Coke. Love the stuff
and I know it's plain awful for me, so I'm trying to cut down to a few times a week.

But you're never going to hear me whining about a tax on it. It's not food, it's not necessary, it's an extra.

I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs. Coke, however, is my addiction. I've cut way back, but...

27. I read your title line and thought
you might be talking about one of those big fountains like they have in Las Vegas or something...

ahahahahhaha!!

now that's a fountain! :7

But now I remember, although it was so long ago...

walking home from school with my two girlfriends and we would stop at the little neighborhood variety store where we would get a real fountain Vanilla Coke and maybe some Twinkies or something.

good stuff...

:)

41. Exactly
I'm drinking a Coke Zero right this moment, and I love it. But if I have to pay a few extra cents for it? I either will buy less of it (which isn't that much... it's a luxury for me these days) or pay the extra few cents for it!

They were only too happy to bump up the price of a 12-pack by a dollar or more a few months back when (according to them) their operating costs demanded it.

Are they implying that it isn't really "juice"?

At one time I did not really care whether there was a tax on this junk or not. Now, thanks to those dumbass commercials, I want them to tax the crap out of the idiots responsible for them.

28. It is a drink that contains ingredients other than fruit juice.
IIRC it is also used when a juice other than the main flavoring juice is used. For example, Juicy Juice brand Cherry Juice drink consists mostly of apple juice, but gets its flavor from the cherry juice.

40. Despite my arguments
in the thread about food stamps and soda, I have no problem with a tax being put on soda or other products made with HFCS or other unhealthy ingredients.

I understand the arguments about the tax hurting the lower income families more, as it's dis-proportional via cost for them, but at the same time, it's unhealthy and should be subject to a tax that could help benefit our society.
