Okay, this letter made me laugh out (very) loud.
Background: ARCHBISHOP OF Tuam Dr Michael Neary has strongly discouraged people from gathering at Knock Shrine, Co Mayo (Ireland), in the hope of seeing an apparition of Our Lady....earlier this month, more than 5,000 people gathered at the shrine in the hope of seeing an apparition.

Dublin-based clairvoyant Joe Coleman had predicted that Our Lady would appear at the old parish church at 3pm that day. During the gathering, there were ripples of applause from the crowd when some people said they could see the sun shimmering, changing colour and dancing in the sky.

A statement issued on Mr Coleman’s behalf last night described him as “an acclaimed visionary” who had predicted recent events at Knock. Mr Coleman said, while he was deeply disappointed by the archbishop’s statement, he had to say, sadly, that he was not surprised...He added that he had received a message from Our Lady urging “all her children to go to Confession and get reconciliation from her son, Jesus”.

So, the letter:

Madam, – I’m a little confused that the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, is discouraging people from gathering at Knock to witness apparitions which he believes “risk misleading God’s people and undermining faith”.

This is the the same “faith” that believes that a cosmic Jew who was his own father by a virgin can enable you to live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh, drink his blood and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from something invisible called your soul that is present because a woman made from a rib was convinced by a talking snake to eat an apple from a magical tree. – Yours, etc,

LIAM MEEHAN,

La Vista Avenue,

Killester, Dublin 5.

12. Fair enough. But sad to think that sending mocking letters to churches is what...
gets this person's rocks off. Try volunteering. Make-A-Wish. A food bank. Something.

15. Things have changed in Ireland
not so long ago I'd bet none of the papers in the country would have printed a letter like that.

I had a friend who grew up there who once said that if you had a tire blow out and screamed "Jesus, Mary & Joseph!" when it happened, it would be all over the county in a few hours that you'd had a vision of the Holy Family.
