Has the economy started to turn around?
Edited on Tue Oct-27-09 09:13 AM by kentuck
There have been some positive signs lately. Caterpillar is hiring again. Some employers are starting to bring back their laid-off employees. Home prices are up for 4 months in a row. Some states are reporting a decline in unemployment. Have we turned the corner?

1. Wait until March
That's when the last half of the stimulus will have run it's course, and we'll see if it holds or folds. I am expecting a pretty big slide if job creation doesn't improve.

2. It's Certainly Stabilized
but banks are still panicked and not lending to sensible credit risks. So it will apparently take a little longer.

3. I think so.
Unemployment in California went down slightly, ever so slightly, in September. In a few weeks we'll get the October report and then we'll see if that was a blip or if we're really seeing a turn around.

5. Just because unemployment went down doesn't mean
the economy is doing better. If companies aren't hiring and there are millions upon millions out of work, then there is NO recovery.

10. That was being spun as a green shoot yesterday
Call me crazy when you sever the employment of 2500 people and bring back 550 it isn't a green shoot.

8. They'll tell you at 8:30am Eastern on Thursday
That's when the third quarter's GDP growth rate will be announced. It's going to be artificially positive.

Then, next Friday, we'll get the unemployment report. It may be 10%. TeeVee economists will break their necks looking back and forth at the two reports. Expect hilarity to ensue.

9. I don't think so
The big banks are still in trouble and are still contracting credit.

Caterpillar isn't hiring again. They told 550 workers they would come back sometime in 2010 and told 2500 employees there won't be a job for them in the future and handed them severance checks. That article posted on here was bad spin.

The S&P is believed to be overvalued by 40%

On a personal note, when I drive by the distibution center area of my community I see more and more vacancies. If businesses were projecting a recovery they wouldn't be cancelling the leases on their distribution centers.

12. I was really pleased to see that our school fundraising still hit its target
My son's school hit its fundraising target. So did the non-profit organization that helps the district out when it needs extra financial help for special projects like curriculum updates or teacher training. We also learned that the school district didn't have to lay off any teachers this year as they were fearing they might have to. This is no way diminishes the suffereing unemployed people are going through. I just think that we should be reporting the good news that is out there. Hopefully, the economy is turning the corner and hopefully we will start to hear more good news and more people getting hired.
