Harry Reid improved his chances of winning his next election.
By coming out for a public option, albeit an opt-out option after one year, he has greatly improved his odds in his next election. Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln would be wise to follow his example. None of them can win if they piss off the base. There is a new reality. The progressives within the Party will no longer look past those that piss on the Party.

1. There was never a doubt. Voters make selections based on
"the name you know."

Incumbents who seek reelection are successful more than 90% of the time. It doesn't matter what the disapproval rating for congress is, they are reelected. About the only way to get a new face in the crowd is through retirement of death. And even dead ones have been reelected.

2. There is some doubt. He is polling badly against every Republican seeking the nomination
but I agree the stand he took on HCR probably improved his chances. He is still one of the Republicans top 2 targets in the 2010 election.

3. Nevada is getting it's ass kicked in this economic crisis
13.5% unemployment rate.

Harry's health care vote is going to be a very minor issue of the 2010 campaign unless that comes down below 9%

5. We'll see.
I called his office last week re the "emergency" UI extension and told the male aide who answered that his boss was the worse democratic majority leader ever. I said that Reid was a spineless pieback who doesn't deserve re-election, and that if Dashell or LBJ were in his position with the clear majority that Reid has, they would have invoked cloture within days of the bill leaving the Finance Committee and it would have been passed by now.

As it happens, later that day, he made the cloture motion under the morning business schedule.

He's still in trouble in his state, and he's got more to do before he's out of the woods. Maybe if President Obama campaigns for him, he will make a better showing in the polls.

For now, he still gets the side eye from me.

7. YOU SHOULD call his office and tell him just that..
that you were planning to stay home and not vote for him but because of his move today, you will support him. He MUST be informed what his constituents are thinking after this move.

You should call him NOW!!
