Extremist doctors: Saving women from the anguish of sluttiness
In theory, the concept is simple: a woman walks into a pharmacy with a birth-control prescription from her doctor and should walk out with the medication—without intimidation, without delay, without a run-around. But in reality, there is a growing movement of pharmacists refusing to fill women's legally prescribed birth-control prescriptions. Some pharmacists even go so far as to lecture women, humiliate them in public, or refuse to hand back the prescription after they refuse to fill it.

These pharmacists are emboldened because of laws referred to as refusal clauses (sometimes called "conscience" clauses), which permit a broad range of individuals and institutions—including hospitals, hospital employees, health-care providers, employers, and insurers—to refuse to provide, pay, counsel or even refer for medical treatment.

Recently there has been a resurgence of legislative activity related to refusal clauses. On the federal level, anti-choice members of Congress passed a sweeping law known as the Federal Refusal Clause, which permits health-care companies to refuse to comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations that pertain to abortion services, counseling, and referrals. On the state level, in 2008, anti-choice legislators in 10 states have introduced bills like these. And, most recently, the Bush Department of Health and Human Services published a regulation that further expanded refusal rights; the regulation offers broad rights to employees who are only tangentially involved in providing the services at issue (for example, receptionists scheduling appointments), and it has the potential to grant entire health-care corporations the same "conscience" rights as those offered to individuals.

10. Why would they have the same reservations about viagra?
It would be hypocritical for them to sell condoms, the viagra reference just doesn't make sense.

6. There is a student organization to train future pharmacists in this
There is a pharmacy organization, "Christian Pharmacists Association" that has student groups on campuses which train the pharmacy students in denying care due to their "conscience". I was thoroughly disgusted when I found out.

11. It's got nothing to do with conscience.
And everything to do with telling women what they're allowed to do with their vaginas. These are some sick, sick puppies. I hope I never run across one--I'm really not sure I could control my rage.

36. It has to do with trying to outbreed those horrible liberal atheists.
I also heart pat robertson blurt out one time that the reason that abortion was so terrible was the loss of 'all those white babies'. They are afraid they will be outnumbered by people with color in their skin.

12. Corporate policy should prohibit these practices
They could refuse to hire these "pharmacists" based on a loss of revenue. Before hiring these "pharmacists" they could ask where they stand on these issue.

And if enough corporations did this then that would force these "pharmacists" to seek employment elsewhere, perhaps Pat Robertson could open pharmacies.

Also women who are denied their prescriptions from these "pharmacists" should get their names and post them online, but before posting they should call and find out where they stand on prescribing PED (do they fill Viagra and other hard-on scripts). Take names and the place of employment. Reverse humiliation.

"We can pick and choose which of your prescriptions we will fill."

13. Thank you, ccharles000 for posting this!
What about women who take birth control for ovarian cysts like me? Taking the pill helped shrink my cyst. Where do the fuck do these pharmacists get off in lecturing women that they don't even know? Again, they could have ovarian cysts or be sexually active, but can't emotionally or physically give birth. In many cases it's a life saver.

14. I take birth control pills for post menopausal HRT. I buy mine on the internet.
They are low priced generic versions of estradiol and progesterone. The insurance cos and pharmaceutical cos and Christian pharmacists can all kiss my ass.

18. Thank you. Another way that birth control is useful besides
contraceptive. I hate to be pro-corp, but Target pharmacy fills my prescription for birth control for free. I've heard about some Catholic run pharmacies that refuse birth control pills and condoms. That sucks.

15. This infuriates me.
If they cannot fill the prescriptions, they should look for another profession, and refusing to return a prescription is grounds for a good thrashing. Seriously. How is it we never hear of vegans whining about working in an abattoir?

16. It's their job. If they don't want to do their job they should seek
other employment. On my employment application, there was a section that asked if there was anything that would keep me from being able to perform the duties required of my position. Either their application didn't have this question or else they lied. Lying on an application is grounds for dismissal.

A nurse or therapist who refused to treat a patient based on some bullshit philosophical grounds would be fired at worst and disciplined at best. Do your goddamn job or find another line of work.

21. They refuse to hand back the prescription slip?
First they won't do their jobs, but then they commit a theft too? And these thieves have the colossal nerve to claim to be such devout Christians? Why am I not surprised?

Please tell me these bullshit "conscience clauses" don't permit these thefts.

If anyone steals a prescription slip from me, I'm calling the police on the spot and reporting a theft in progress.
