The Magic of Michelle
By CHARLES M. BLOW
Published: October 23, 2009

Forgive me in advance for fawning, but Michelle Obama is the coolest first lady ever. She clinched it for me this week by jumping double Dutch on the South Lawn as part of a “healthy kids fair.”

The scene underscored my impression of the first lady as utterly unencumbered by convention. She seems to feel free — free enough to loosen up and laugh a little, free enough to let her inner child peek through the veil of parenthood, free enough to be herself.

1. It's a joy to see a First Lady who enjoys life and
doesn't look constipated like Laura Bush with that fake smile on her face.

4. She is an intelligent, confident woman and I am very impressed with her!
She seems quite comfortable in her own skin, and I *love* that she has put an organic garden and a beehive on the grounds. She is also quite stylish in a very modern way.

5. More than being free is the fact she choses to be as free as she wants
Because we're all free but few chose to live it. That's what I like and admire about her. Making those choices to practice living free takes real bravery and real conviction.

8. Y'know, I want 8 years of Obama, and I want it to be 8 years of progressive victories. But if Obama
just turns out to be a one term President, I think he and his wife will have done the country an enormous good by the way they have consistently reached out to inspire the nation's children of all colors

9. Well, to be fair...
What other first lady could jump Double Dutch?

Not to take away from Michelle, but jump rope and hula hoop is fluff. I'd like to see her in a basketball game, or playing poker or maybe arm wrestling Sarah Palin.

10. Speaking of Hula Hoop, I was so sure the RWers were
going to make a big deal about that. But I was kind of surprised that Rachel Maddow featured it as something perhaps to be considered negatively. I hope that I'm wrong, but I think that I got the distinct impression that Maddow did not like it.
