Glenn Beck back on the sauce, and calling for violence. Can't ignore this one.
Wow. I heard about this from his Friday show, but didn't watch it until now. Only three comments: A. He's calling for violence against the President. B. What kind of mentally challenged person could POSSIBLY take this guy seriously? I fear to know. C. He was drunk in the video. Look at his eyes. Look at how he buttons and unbuttons his sports jacket. Look at his gestures. Needless to say, look at his threatening gestures with a baseball bat.

If you can stomach it, and it's OK if you can't. But please be aware of just how far he is calling out his "Tea Party" sycophants to go. It includes death, quite obviously.

All the best to Newshounds for this one. http://www.newshounds.us/2009/10/24/with_slurred_speech_beck_exhorts_viewers_to_stand_up_and_risk_getting_whacked_by_the_obama_administration.php#more

39. I'm sure that's a big part of it.
He has plenty of money for top gun lawyers and any violence he can provoke is a bonus.

He is the worst sort of agent provocateur.

3. I have a feeling he's always been nuts
but self medicating with alcohol helped him keep the lid on for years.

Now the crazy has popped all the way out and the alcohol isn't helping any more.

It's got to be terrifying. The only question is whether he'll flame out on the air or do it in public off the air.

He'll do it eventually.

8. I think they could, for many reasons. But they won't.
I have never lived in an era where flagrant calls for violence like this are shrugged off. Somebody should call this kind of ugliness out. He was both drunk and calling for killing the president. Unbelievable.

23. No, there is no evidence in that clip that he is drunk or slurring.
He is repulsive, yes. And he is clearly hinting that someone should try to "get" the president. The SS should certainly be taking this seriously, because it is a thinly veiled attempt to provoke some of his more disturbed listeners to try something. As Frank Schaeffer said, he is trollign for assassins. But I see no evidence at all that he is drunk.

The supposed "slurring" is merely his ridiculous attempt to sound like a tough-talking gangster. He obviously think he is wonderfully witty and cute when he puts on that clownish "gangster" speech.

How on earth can anyone watch and listen to this idiot without being thoroughly creeped out?

he was once addicted to drugs. And they say when he was a child (and he acts like it now) he had attention deficit disorder. Like I said he sure acts like he still has this disorder. I am not making fun of him when I say, this guy is liable to loose it all together on camera. He gets himself so worked up to impress the viewers.

19. He is simply mischaracterizing
the president's words entirely. This goes on on Fixed Noise 24/7. Is there any wonder that Fuxe viewers are so completely misinformed.

President Obama has never sought to 'strong arm' anyone on health care reform. This is a bold faced lie by Beck. President Obama has only tried to show the truth while others (like Beck) spread vicious lies.

being a Mormon and all. There is no proscription against caffeine. The Word of Wisdom prohibits "coffee and tea", which has been interpreted as traditional green and black teas. So, lots of Mormons drink Coke, Pepsi--oh, my--even Mountain Dew.

There is no defending Beck here, so I won't do that. lol.

30. The other news organizations will 'go to bat' for FOX
The disclaimers are getting weaker and weaker. Did you hear the little part just before the conclusion - 'There ain't nobody getting whacked here'?

He throws that in so that he can defend himself later by saying it was all a metaphor, but he is clearly calling for violence.

Crap of it is the other news organizations will go to 'bat' for FOX

Classic projection. You may hate him. You CAN hate him. But what's needed badly in the country is a debate of ideas--and metaphors are allowed on both sides--not knee jerking.

35. Even if that were true, we do not have our own national show.
Looking back at the the darkest days of Bush/Cheney, there was nothing, absolutely nothing on Olbermann or Maddow to mirror Beck's violence-tinged rants. And there certainly were no MSNBC viewers showing up to Bush rallies armed to the teeth. Beck is not offering metaphors -- he's simply not that sophisticated and neither is his audience. When Beck implores his viewers to pick up a baseball bat, one could bet donuts to dollars they are not saying to themselves -- "oh, clearly that's a metaphorical entreaty to write to our senators and reps in protest." No, there is no comparison.

37. Does Glenn Beck have ideas?
Or does he just spout BS to whip his viewers into an angry froth? Big difference, the way I see it.

I'm all for debating ideas. Problem is the people I know who agree with his BS are so hopelessly misinformed that they couldn't debate any subject if they tried - usually they just repeat buzzwords -socialist, socialist, socialist- It is easier to be a follower than to form opinions based on facts (the latter often requires more effort to cull than it takes to spend an hour listening to the likes of Beck, or even the news). The sad fact is that most people do not have time to do hard research into current events. They are too damn busy working and trying to survive. They depend on the news for their information, the very news that is bought and paid for by Corporate interests.

Like Beck.

It would be amazingly refreshing to see news programs that actually allowed a true, real, honest to god debate on ideas--with hard facts and a nice dose of the TRUTH. IMO America and Americans would change dramatically, as a result.

41. Fair points, all.
Unfortunately, I had to go offline right after my comment, so didn't see these until this morning. My only qualm: knee jerk reaction on one side does not make it right on the other. We need clear heads. There's a difference between passionately defending an idea--which Beck sometimes does well--and calling someone on the other side a scum bag, just because.

He's trying to provoke violence against us "regular" people.

No one is going to attack the President of the United States with a baseball bat. But a bat would work pretty well against a pro-health-reform protestor or a women's clinic escort. This is what Beck wants his zombie horde to do.
