Neo-Nazi group rallies in Riverside as hundreds of counter-demonstrators protest
Police stood between the two sides for most of the three-hour demonstration as the opposing groups hurled insults and slurs - and the occasional bottle of water - at each other.

A group of neo-Nazis and hundreds of counter-demonstrators squared off for the second time in Riverside’s Casa Blanca neighborhood Saturday, briefly scuffling before being separated by police.

Police stood between the two sides for most of the three-hour demonstration as the opposing groups hurled insults and slurs - and the occasional bottle of water - at each other.

Two people were arrested, including one man whom police believe helped incite a brawl that broke out soon after the rally started. The other man was taken into custody after someone tossed something in the direction of officers lined up between the two groups. Neither man was identified by authorities.

“Our goal is to allow the two sides to express themselves in a safe manner,” said Sgt. Jaybee Brennon, spokeswoman for the Riverside Police Department. ”We just want everyone to be safe.”

The rally was the second gathering by the National Socialist Movement, which called the gathering as a way to protest the impact of illegal immigration and the lack of government intervention on the issue. The last rally in September ended quickly when a small group of neo-Nazis were confronted by hundreds of counter-protesters and were chased off. The Nazi group said after they were asked to leave by police, while authorities said the group left on its own.

The group on its Web site vowed that it would not be chased off Saturday and was being reinforcements to help keep the peace.

Neo-Nazi demonstration in Riverside spurs confrontations
10:00 PM PDT on Saturday, October 24, 2009

By LORA HINES
The Press-Enterprise

A brief fistfight and a lime-throwing incident led to arrests of at least two counterprotesters Saturday during a three-hour neo-Nazi rally near a well-known Riverside day labor gathering site.

The fight erupted minutes after 20 neo-Nazis arrived and took positions behind metal barricades erected by the Riverside Police Department near Madison Street and Railroad Avenue. Police barricaded an estimated 600 counterprotesters about 150 feet away on the other side of the street.

But more than two dozen counterprotesters, including members of the Brown Berets, a Chicano activist group, rushed toward the neo-Nazis and the two groups yelled at each other.

One unidentified Brown Beret member, who was later arrested, pushed over a barricade and a brawl between both sides barely started before dozens of officers wearing riot gear and using batons quickly stopped it.

Another counterprotester, who identified himself as Geronimo Rivera, 32, was led away by police and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Rivera, held on $25,000 bail, was arrested in connection with limes being thrown at the neo-Nazis shortly before the rally ended.

The counterprotesters cheered as the neo-Nazis ended the rally, giving the signature Nazi salute as motorcycle officers escorted them to their SUVs and minivans.

18. How many I dunno exactly.

But I'm always scared I'm gonna see my sister's face pop up on one of these sometime.

We cheer on the kids who escape batshit conservative families to become liberal...well I can tell you that sometimes it works the other way 'round as well...I have avoided her for over twenty years and have managed not to to speak to her for 8 years now.

As for real numbers, not that many. But they are armed, violently inclined and absolutely nuts. Unfortunately economic depression seems to make them more attractive. I ultimately blame Reagan for my sister. She graduated from high school to even slimmer work prospects than I did and that might have something to do with it.

Of course, the major reason is that she is a selfish bitch and has been since she was little. The philosophy jibes with her sense of entitlement. Believe me, 'white' is probably one of the few things she has going. She fits right in with those idiots.

13. hey CNN - that's Lou Dobbs' audience - aren't you proud?
I can't believe Dobbs is allowed to spout his paranoid b.s. on CNN. what a disgrace for them. yet another reason I dropped all but basic cable - and you know what?

My life is BETTER because I don't know what that idiot Beck is saying, Don't hear that has-been Ann Coulter speak her bullshit.

The only reason thing I care to know about is who advertises on Rush Limbaugh or Beck's program, etc. because I will not purchase any of their products, either. Ever again. And I tell others not to purchase products that support the fascist bullshitters either.

While I respect the right to free speech, I'm also glad I can exercise my rights to refuse to support any organization or business that promotes hate speech, especially when it's "sanitized" by big money.

In any case, I hope no one gets hurt at these protests, but if anyone does get hurt, I hope it's the neo nazis.

14. some from our church were there. unfortunately some "good guys" were as bad as the nazis....
in their behavior at this specific event. and having gang bangers there to protest nazis, well that's some kind of irony is it not?
we had a dozen or so from the Riverside Unitarian Universalist church in attendance. We also had members at the protest protest in September when the goons tried to protest outside Riverside's synagogue.

the whole point of these right wingers is to generate publicity for their cause, and in that they succeeded admirably.

16. I heard aBBC (via NPR) debate that got pretty heated
over even letting him come on the Question Time program. It was 88.5 i think it was, I had hit search on the truck radio since I was traveling out of my normal area.
It got pretty bigoted with some of his supporters called in then they had a couple 'experts' chiming in. There were protesters from the left in front of the BBC London building(I have never been and not really familiar with how BBC is set up).
Here in the States when rightwingers protest and 'theres 2 million teabaggers on the mall', but there really was only about 75,000, But if that many gays calling for equal rights there is barely a note on the nuz.

From hearing this guy only as a call-in guest, I think his attitude seemed to show he is a bigot, and likely a bit crazy to boot. That their party has seats in government is plain scary.
