Earhart's Final Resting Place Believed Found

Oct. 23, 2009 -- Legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart mostly likely died on an uninhabited tropical island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati, according to researchers at The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR).

Tall, slender, blonde and brave, Earhart disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937 in a record attempt to fly around the world at the equator. Her final resting place has long been a mystery.

For years, Richard Gillespie, TIGHAR's executive director and author of the book "Finding Amelia," and his crew have been searching the Nikumaroro island for evidence of Earhart. A tiny coral atoll, Nikumaroro was some 300 miles southeast of Earhart's target destination, Howland Island.

A number of artifacts recovered by TIGHAR would suggest that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, made a forced landing on the island's smooth, flat coral reef.

13. I just watched a documentary on "The Search for Amelia Earhart" and...
Edited on Sun Oct-25-09 10:37 AM by Spazito
there are at least 3 different theories as to what happened to her, this one being one. The shoe found was NOT the size Earhart would have worn, the skeletal remains disappeared well before Gillespie appeared on the scene and the information provided re the skeletal remains before they disappeared was very generic.

There is nothing new found by Gillespie to warrant, imo, the article by Discovery.

One of the other theories which is at least as plausible as Gillespie's is that she set down in the Marshall Islands and was captured by the Japanese who had taken over the Islands by this time.

It is a fascinating subject but this article seems to be appearing at this time to promote the movie coming out as opposed to being "new" material, imo.

You mean, Discovery might push pseudo-science in order to get people to watch a movie or its own shows?

I think the original story, that her plane went down in the ocean and she and Noonan were killed, is the only plausible explanation.

18. It is a fascinating mystery....
and the various theories, too, make for interesting reading. It may well be she did crash in the ocean after running out of fuel but that explanation is so 'mundane' I have no doubt the alternate theories will continue unless or until the cause of her disappearance is actually solved.
