On another board an aquaintance of mine was attacked in Melbourne. She said the 'Victim of Crime' board will compensate her for the medical bills; personal items that were damaged; and something/some help for mental issues relating.

SERIOUSLY?

I'm here in the US.

3. Here in the U.S. if your offender is convicted you can sometimes get restitution.
I had my car and some other items stolen about 9 years ago. The car was recovered but there was some damage to my property. The perps had to pay me restitution as part of their penalty.

4. There are rules attached,
but in Ontario you will get some compensation, as well...especially for a physical attack.

8. UK system

The UK has two schemes which help with this too.

One is the Criminal Injuries Compensation scheme - a statutory scheme - under which if you suffer physical or acute psychiatric injuries as a result of a criminal assault (or loss of life of a family member to homicide) you can apply for compensation. Compensation is based mainly on a tariff system now, with some recompense if you suffer loss of earhings for more than 28 weeks as a result of injury. There is a maximum of £500k on the very most serious cases.

The scheme would only pay for private medical treatment to the extent this is considered reasonable - but as the NHS would provide most treatments this is not a big issue for most victims.

Criminals can be made to pay reparations too through the criminal justice system. Not a useful remedy in most cases as they dont have a lot of assets.

We also have the Motor Insurers Bureau which is a scheme under which the Car Insurance companies are required to pay into a fund to which you can apply if you are injured by the negligent driving of an uninsured driver. This pays accident compensation under the normal personal injury basis of assessment but does not cover the damage to your car or possessions.
