In a thread posted earlier, calling for the withholding of donations to the democratic party, at first thought, I felt it was a good idea. Upon reflection, I'm not so sure, as I am reminded of Fidel Castro, when he was in the jungles with his guerrila fighters, in his quest to overthrow the Batista government. Castro had reached out to the U.S. for support. Vice President Richard Nixon was sent to meet with Castro. The result of that meeting would change the course of American foreign policy with Cuba for the next 50 years.
When Nixon advised Castro that the U.S. would not help in his cause, what then did Fidel do? He turned toward the Soviet Union, who was more than eager to fill that void.
My point is this. Most politicians see us as irrelevant, anyway, except when it comes to grabbing as many campaign volunteers as possible to lay out the groundwork and do all of the heavy lifting for them. And every single time, once elected, these same assholes forget about us. Just like Lucy and the football, in the Peanuts comic strip.
What I am thinking, is that, if we withhold our funding of democratic candidates, and ONLY withhold our money, it will just drive candidates further into the arms of the corporations who can bundle tens of millions of dollars for congressional candidates.
PEOPLE, WE WILL, AT SOME POINT IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE HAVE TO TAKE TO THE STREETS, AS WELL!!!
We should withhold our campaign contributions, AND take to the streets.
For those who are old enough to remember what the cultural climate was like, during the height of the Vietnam war, it took hundreds of thousands of protesters, during an endless string of marches, sit-ins, much blood spilled, and some radical behavior to finally get mom and pop up off of the couch and get involved. Then, and only then did the govt. finally "get it."
I would never advocate any sort of violent act, unless one was perpetrated against us citizens by the govt. first, but how in the world can we expect to get anything accomplished otherwise, in this day of corporate end arounds?
We are under seige, and those of you who are too damned comfortable to make waves had better wake up.
I will bet my last dollar that, if we only withheld contributions, the candidates would just camp out on the corporate doorstep. The corporations, trust me, would be only too happy to oblige them.
