Is Operation Mockingbird still operational?

When I watch "News" people like Jake Tapper jump to the defense of Fox (R), I wonder.

Why wouldn't Ailes et al find it acceptable to keep one or two "on retainer" and use them for cover when the heat is on (like now)?

Such a belief presumes that news organizations are corruptible. This is obviously an absurd notion.
