I need to rant...I want my symbols back.
Edited on Fri Oct-23-09 10:22 PM by Joe Fields
I feel the need to rant about something that I've never discussed here.

To many of you here, the young ones, this may seem silly, maybe trite, outdated, whatever adjective you wish to use.

BUT I WANT MY SYMBOLS OF AMERICA BACK THAT THOSE DIRTY, LOUSY, GREEDMONGERING, CHICKENHAWKING RIGHTWINGERS AND THEIR PAID MINIONS STOLE FROM ME....

As a child growing up in the midwest, with sensible midwest values, a loving family, a democratic family, a family who stuck together through thick and thin, I knew the value of being an American at a very early age. I felt privileged to be an American. I KNEW I was unique in the world. My parents taught me that I was no better than anyone else, and conversely, no one was better than me. I have never felt special. Just grateful, for my parents educated me as to how fortunate I was, compared to most of the rest of the world. I cannot appreciate those two great people enough for helping to shape my world view.

When I was growing up, the American flag made me proud. It meant a lot to me. Not just the current flag, with fifty stars. The don't tread on me flag was a great symbol of the colonists struggle for independence. The flag with thirteen stars symbolized the proud success that those colonists had in forming a republic, separate from England. The first thirteen states! WOW!!! I'm tearing up right now thinking back to those days. The struggles and hardships of those early revolutionaries, against all odds, and the creation of the greatest country on earth was something that I understood at a very early age. You see, I was one of those geeky kids in elementary school who read biographies of of our founding fathers and famous Americans, instead of Highlight, Boys Life, the comics(not that there is anything wrong with those reading materials, but just to show you what I fed on) I read about Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, etc... I read so much, I always got reading and book report awards. I loved history from the start, because those stories of the struggle for freedom, and our subsequent success meant everything to me. The American flag symbolizes all of this for me. Or, at least it did, until people like Ronald Reagan and George Bush rendered it almost meaningless to me today. I could never bring myself to burn a flag, and would stop someone from doing so, if I was close enough to stop them from it.

And I say GOD DAMN THOSE FUCKERS ALL THE WAY TO HELL FOR WRAPPING THEMSELVES IN THE FLAG THAT USED TO MEAN SO MUCH TO ME, SO THAT THEY COULD MANIPULATE GOOD AMERICANS FOR THESE FUCKERS OWN EVIL ENDS!!!!

Another symbol, the Bald Eagle, is one I had grown up to be proud of. Not so much as the flag, the eagle and it's connotation of a strong, proud, ever vigilant creature meant a lot to me. Not anymore. Ben Franklin once suggested that our symbol should be the Turkey. It sounds good now, but I think the eagle is appropriate. It now reminds me of all of the predatory fuckers on Wall Street who thumb their noses at us, ready to swoop down and sink their talons into our flesh. The vulture would also be appropriate, following the eagle, for those greedy fucks to pick our carcasses clean.

And lastly...the words PATRIOTISM" and "FREEDOM"
Right wing scumbags rape the meaning of those words hundreds of times a day on the radio and on television. All of the knuckle dragging, dead-from-the-neck-up callers to these shows bandy the words about so loosely that they have lost all meaning for me. I swear to God that they have no clue what those words REALLY AND TRULY MEAN! Not only do they not know what they mean, but they all use them in a way to marginalize the rest of the country, as if to say that WE, meaning you and I, DON'T believe in those concepts. Socialist left-wingers couldn't possibly be patriotic, or believe in freedom Only the right wingers can lay claim to those terms. You know, the ones who circumvent laws, in order to get around paying taxes. The ones who are against the U.S. holding the Olympics. The ones who love to "exercise their 2nd fucking amendment rights" at presidential functions. Well, until those assholes are just a footnote in history, they can keep those words, because they have rendered them meaningless.

I swear to God, If I win Powerball, I will become another George Soros, and fight fire with an even greater fire, until these people, the ones who, not only have ruined the precious symbols of my country that I had grown up to love, the ones who are REALLY the ruination of this country, have become an embarrassing footnote, a lesson to be learned by future generations of Americans.

I won't rest until that day comes and I can have my symbols back.

End of rant.

Joe Fields

On edit,

These are the reasons why representatives, like Denis Kucinich, Alan Grayson and Anthony Weiner mean so very much to me.

The Omega Glory.
Reading the Constitution.

Entire episode.

I do believe in miracles. And see many of the sci-fi shows as metaphors.

I also do not worship the Constitution, but know that the teachings of God Almighty through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ are also supported with structures of justice and ideas like all the people are equal, democracy, and taking care of a societies people.

Note: if all you see is a racial or economic system difference in that episode...

Why do you see it that way?.

I was 13 years old, when Capt. James T. Kirk first entered my house in the late 60's.

6. How DARE they use the Gadsden Flag? I want it back, too!!
To me, the Gadsden flag was flown against everything the ultra-right represents. I love that flag, and I want it back!

Also the Statue of Liberty. Set her free!

12. Amazing how many people misunderstand this quote ...
"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

It is NOT knocking patriotism. It is acknowledging that scoundrels wish to manipulate people to act against their own interests, and since people respond very strongly to patriotism, manipulating them through appeals to their patriotism is just too profitable to scoundrels for them not to exploit that reaction. The wingnuts who have taken over the GOP have shown just how far this idea can be taken. This is not reason to be sparing or reluctant in one's patriotism -- it is a reason to be watchful of one's partiotism, to see that it is not exploited by such scheming. It is not shameful to be duped as a patriot, but it is unforgivable NOT TO BE ANGRY ABOUT IT. If demagogues like Beck and Limbaugh ever succeed in attracting real patriots, they should be aware that the worst thing that could happen to them is for those patriots to wise up and carry the torches and pitchforks to their own lairs.
