Teen Pulled From School Bus, Arrested

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A teen was pulled off a school bus in the middle of a field trip on Friday after police linked him to a violent crime.

On Friday morning, Kansas City, Kan., school officials got word from police that a teen suspected to be involved in a home invasion on Thursday afternoon was a sophomore at Schlagle High School.

The student was on a bus heading to Manhattan for a tour of Kansas State when Lawrence police pulled the bus over and arrested the student in front of his classmates.

Police said that the teen was one of the men involved in a home invasion near 47th Street and Cleveland Avenue in Kansas City, Kan., on Thursday. Investigators said three men went into the house with guns and shots were fired. The three men ran out, all with gunshot wounds.

2. It just sounds silly to describe a high school sophomore ...

... as "one of the men involved". Why are reporters so afraid to use the word "boy" when talking about male juveniles? It never seems to bother them to call a female teen a "girl".

that would be my guess.. referring to him as a boy..even once would be used by the defense, as a reason why he should be tried as a minor.

It's not clear whether all four are juveniles or any of the other three are adults, and it would've been awkward to write "one of the men and/or boys involved."

I don't know if there is a lot compared to other cities this size but we do seem to have a pretty significant gang presence here - especially juvenile gangs.

Of course, since I teach, I have more interaction with them. So I could be biased.

We have a new alternative school that is having lots of problems mainly because kids from rival gangs are in class together since they are coming from all over the city. Dumb idea by the school district trying to save money.

Police have not released the student's name since he is a juvenile. Prosecutors have not charged anyone in the home invasion.
