He just said that on Hardball. This should give some insight into the Republicans fucked up minds.

They are still fighting Vietnam after they all got deferments to avoid going themselves when they had the chance.

3. Sure, perhaps Mr. Jeffries would like to elaborate on how...
Or what "winning" in Vietnam would have looked like? I'm all ears.

A simple truth that goes back to at least the beginnings of guerrilla warfare by Native North Americans, if not back to the Romans... The only way for an Imperial power to effectively defeat a well organized, native guerrilla insurgency is to commit genocide, and forcibly repopulate the territory with their own settlers and half-caste survivors allowed to remain as an underclass.

As such was not considered a viable strategy (funny thing happened between 1941-45 that generally changed some minds as to the legality/morality of such actions) Vietnam was unwinnable by any means currently known.

4. ridiculous
Promising an end to the war in Vietnam, Richard Nixon won a narrow victory in the election of 1968. Slightly more than 30,000 young Americans had been killed in the war when Nixon took office in January 1969. The new president retained his predecessor’s goal of a non-Communist South Vietnam, however, and this could not be ensured without continuing the war. Nixon’s most pressing problem was how to make peace and war at the same time. His answer was a policy called “Vietnamization.” Under this policy, he would withdraw American troops and the South Vietnamese army would take over the fighting.

if we had just let Patton march straight to Moscow in '45...

Don't you just love delusional revisionist points of view?

Personally, I blame Jesus... if only he would've... (fill in blank)... to justify (fill in blank #2)

6. Yeah, that's a good one.
Certainly that would have been a disaster. The American people had neither the stomach nor the will for such a war, and while the Soviet Union was a wreck in 1945, it did have a far larger army in Europe than we did. Might the Soviets been eventually defeated? Sure, by maybe 1950 or so. But at what cost?

Oh wait, the whole point of delusional alternate history is to ignore the costs.

12. We might still be fighting that war. Russia, like Afghanistan, has a natural ally ... winter
Patton would only have the summer to conquer the entire continent. The Russians would be retreating to their homes and supplies while the US supply lines would become untenable. Their goal would be delay until the winter.

After the second A Bomb drop the surprise would have been gone.

The Germans couldn't do it with a fresh Army.

8. Yeah, and I can think of a couple thousand U.S. soldiers and billions of
taxpayer dollars that we'd still have with us if those idiotic Republicans hadn't followed their fearless leader George Bush into the war in Iraq.

That and a nickel won't get you a pot to piss in. Fuck the GOP, every last one of them! You couldn't find more evil people if you tried.

13. Had an asshole tell me that one time...
kind of dangerous, what with me being one of those unstable, Marine, Viet vet types.

I gently pointed out that we sent a total of 3 million soldiers and Marines there over the years, sometimes 500,000 were in the country at the same time. We had control of the air, helicopters, tanks, unlimited supplies, all the ammo we could use, and modern technology. We outnumbered North Vietnam more than 100 to 1. They lost 1 million soldiers and 2 million civilians. South Vietnam lost about 200,000 soldiers and 1 million civilians. We lost 58,000 dead and another 150,000 wounded.

I asked him if he wanted a wider war than that? What victory did you want?

Then I asked him if he had been in the service. Yup. Navy supply clerk. I was getting a little wound up at this point and called him a fucking pogue and left the area.

He probably fought in his own way..... never retreated, but he probably backspaced a few times.

14. Had your chance, Terry
Jeez, you just had eight years of control of all branches of government, the most solicitous popular media coverage I've ever seen, and you couldn't get the job done. Now, after nine months, you expect the Democrats to have completely cleaned up the mess it took you eight years to create?

Why don't you go enlist and show us all how it's done, Mr. Jeffries?

After going to South Korea 3 times, and knowing how many wanted us to leave there... I can't imagine if we had surrendered there.
