3. The human tragedies behind the shouting matches.
We need to be reminded of this.

What a heartbreaking video. It makes you think, "poor guy, his wife has died". But it turns out that just their dreams and hard work have died, because of her illness.

5. If that doesn't move you, you have no heart.
Thanks for the post. I wish that the politicians could be forced to watch this and then try to tell us that we have the best system in the world.

6. Also tragic is the fact that, with today's real estate market...
...even the horrible option of having to sell your home for medical treatment is no longer available for most families.

13. Exactly.
If it was just a matter of putting your house on the market and the next day you'd have enough money to make things all better, it might be a little easier to accept.

Life doesn't work that way very often. It's been brought up before, but how many Americans are one illness or one layoff away from total ruin? My wife and I would probably be in that situation since I've been out of work for so long. If she gets sick or loses her job, we'll be behind the 8 ball like so many people in the US.

At least we're better off than a lot of people since we're semi-close to having our house paid off. We could probably get enough from our home to cover medical bills for a while. Thanks to the mortgage fiascos brought on by the sheer greediness of so many financial institutions, a lot of people wouldn't even be able to pay off the mortgage.

9. This is very poignant and I have seen in on MSNBC, but
Something hasn't felt right about their ending on TV where they talk about "coalition supported bill". I have been meaning to look them up.

The regular Jane/Joe will get the message WE want from this, but I don't think these folks are our allies. They are co-sponsored by PhRMA and are pushing the Baucus bill.

12. Few people will go to their site.
And most who do won't appreciate the difference between "exchanges" and "opt-outs", etc.

What matters, IMO, is the commercial is very effective at convincing one that *something* must be done about this.

It is very ineffective at describing what specifically must be done. That seems to be left to the viewer.

17. More about the group - Americans for Stable Quality Care
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/november-2009/health/health-care-reform-ads/americans-for-stable-quality-care/health-care-reform-ads-americans-for-stable-quality-care.htm

"...Back story

This everything-but-the-kitchen-sink coalition includes unlikely bedfellows: the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), the American Medical Association, Families USA (a consumer-advocacy group), the Federation of American Hospitals, and the Service Employees International Union, representing health-care and other workers. The campaign is bankrolled largely by PhRMA, which opposed health-care reform during the Clinton presidency but has agreed to work with the Obama White House to cut drug costs by $80 billion, presumably in return for provisions favorable to the industry. It doesn't address the hotly debated public-insurance option..."

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/16/health/policy/16adbox2.html

"This ad, which began running Aug. 13, marks the debut of a coalition of unlikely bedfellows calling itself Americans for Stable Quality Care. Taking the lead is the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. Other partners are the American Medical Association, Families USA, the Federation of American Hospitals and the Service Employees International Union, which represents health care workers...

The ad also omits mention of the contentious issue of a government insurance option because the S.E.I.U. favors it while others in the coalition do not. Nor does it address why these sponsors, particularly the drug companies, are putting so much money into passing an overhaul this year when they opposed President Clinton’s effort in 1993-94. This year, the drug companies have pledged their valuable support in a deal with the White House to cut $80 billion in costs in hopes of heading off much bigger losses if the overhaul allowed drug imports from Canada or allowed the government to demand rebates for drugs purchased under Medicare."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-08-13-healthads_N.htm

"...A coalition called Americans for Stable Quality Care launched a $12 million campaign Thursday supporting the health care effort. The ad, focused on how the legislation would affect people who have insurance, highlights a provision that protects people with pre-existing conditions from losing coverage.

"It's going to be a very noisy August," said Ken Johnson of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the drug industry's trade group and a leading funder of the new coalition. "We're trying to raise awareness of why health care reform is so important."

22. "Senator Carper Publicly Defends Secret PhRMA Deal In Exchange For Support Ads"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJa_kTXad1Q

"In a stunning moment during the Senate Finance Committee markup Sen. Tom Carper defended a secret deal that the White House, Baucus, and PhRMA had reached. The White House has long denied the deal. Carper publicly acknowledges that part of the deal was that PhRMA would run millions of dollars worth of campaign ads in support of health care reform."

It appears that we may have moved from a possible 300 billion over 10 years to 80 billion.

25. kick - this ad is powerful, but why are we not asking about negotiating...
for Medicare drug prices for everyone is not in the bills.

With all the baby boomers moving to Medicare beginning in the next two years, there is an opportunity for major savings.
