VIDEO EXTRA: Owner told Stoughton police: ‘I want my dog back!’
Dog owner finally gets missing pet back after Stoughton animal control officer gives it away to friend of cop

Posted Oct 21, 2009 @ 01:52 AM

But Shai, which Torren bought as a puppy for $1,500, had a locator chip embedded in her ear. Torren said she called the chip’s distributor, 24HourPets.com, and was told on Oct. 1 that Shai’s chip had been scanned by a device licensed to the Stoughton pound on Sept. 18, the same day Shai had escaped.

-------------------------------

Torren said she was furious to learn several days later — from acting Police Chief Thomas Murphy — that Shai had been found by Stoughton Animal Control Officer Kristen Bousquet the same day she was lost. But Bousquet had given the dog, which can cost as much as $2,000, to a friend of a Stoughton police officer on Sept. 22, the acting chief told Torren.

------------------------------

On Sept. 20, she called Bousquet to see if Shai might be at the Stoughton pound. Torren said she received a message from the town on Sept. 21 at 12:24 p.m.

“This is Stoughton animal control. We do not have any dog that matches that description at this time,” the message said, according to Torren.

Two days later, Torren spoke with Bousquet again. By now, Torren said she was frantic.

“(Bousquet) told me to have some respect, that she is a police officer. She was very arrogant,” Torren said.

Now irate, Torren said she called Bousquet on Oct. 1 and gave her an ultimatum — return Shai or face criminal charges.

“I called her up and I said, ‘I want my dog back! I don’t care how you get it back,’” said Torren.

Torren said when she made the threat, Bousquet told her Shai would be at the Stoughton police station within 30 minutes.

1. I have a yorkie - I would be very upset if this happened to me.
Edited on Thu Oct-22-09 11:52 PM by merh
Not because of what the dog cost but because of how loving my boy is, they are loyal and sweet animals - very smart and very playful.

I'd want this officer's badge, what he/she did is despicable.

FWIW: My boy is a rescue, I can't imagine paying that amount of money for a pup.

2. I agree that once the dog was proven to be thw owner's it should have been returned.
However..giving it to a person who would care for it was certainly better than leaving it in a dog pound. I think the intentions were good..

waiting period. As present for cop friend's girlfriend. And then, when the owner first called, animal officer denied dog had been found. Police chief had to confirm dog was found. Thank goodness the owner was tenacious This was dog theft. Animal officer / dog thief is on paid leave pending investigation.

4. The dog was scanned for the chip. The chip should have
identified the dog's owner, and the owner should have been contacted. That's why people chip their pets.

7. How stupid do you have to be to give away a chipped dog?
What it says to me is that she isn't new to criminal behavior and she's always gotten away with it before.

25. she scanned and knew the right owner but gave it away anyway.
favoritism with someone else's baby. I would get a pitch fork and go see this dame if she did that with one of my mob.

8. Small yorkies are notoriously expensive and oft stolen dogs
because the litters are usually small, 1 or 2 pups. Our 5 pounder was part of a litter of 2, she cost $1200 7 years ago. The animal control officer should be fired. If she wanted to give the dog to a friend, fine...she needed to wait until the waiting period was up before doing so, and certainly not lying about it...the lying makes this a theft and proves criminal intent.

10. That woman's lucky her dog wasn't sent to my house...
My cats consider that "snack time." ;-)

But seriously, there's no way the owners of a little dog like that wouldn't be looking for it. I agree with you that the animal control officer needs, at the very least, to be fired.

I didn't realize that the companies who distribute the chips got the readings from scanners at pounds. Interesting...

11. Well, I guess there's something to be said for "worthless" mutts.
Both of my rescues are microchipped because they are priceless to me, but of no material value.

Having said that, the behavior in this case is inexcuseable!!!

13. That almost happened to us years ago
We had a boxer and he ran away. I called the pound and they said they didn't have him, I decided to go down and check and there he was. The cop that had brought him in wanted him so the people at the pound lied for him - that was about 40 years ago. Three little kids would have been very sad if they had lost their dog for good.

17. if you lose an animal it's always best to first call shelters etc but then follow up with a visit
just saying.

one of hardest things to deal with- a missing loved one.

He's a silky/yorkshire terrier, too. I'd be heartbroken if I lost him. He's chipped. All my dogs are.

21. Who cares how much the dog cost?
Even if it was a worthless mangy mutt, they shouldn't have given the dog away so quickly.

The emphasis on the "price" of the dog irritates me.
