Names I've been Called On DU (re: The Meanness of DU)
I don't think DU has gotten meaner. Since I became a DUer on this site, I've been called a few names over time. To this, I say, meh, it's water under the bridge (until the next time I get called a name lol).

Just to show that DU hasn't gotten meaner, I'll post the things I've been called since I've been here (and the majority are not recent, but some are).

Here we go:
Idiot
Fucking Idiot
Moron
Moran
Fucking Moron
Fucking Moran
Duchebag
Asshole
Troll
Freeper
Nastymouth
Bigot
Racist
Vaccer
AntiVaccer (for the record, I'm pro-vaccine)
Extremist
Misogynist

I've also been told I should choke and die on my own bile.

To be fair, I've called some DUers some of these things as well.

Is DU meaner? I don't think so. Could DU be more civil? Absolutely. Do I think it will become more civil? Not so much.

Do you need a thick skin to hang out here. Absolutely.

46. I'm with you ~ I have been insulted many times here
and I continue to be surprised and disappointed.

I just don't feel that FU needs to have a home at DU, especially when it is directed at another poster. I think I understand why , out of frustration, a few words are thrown around to The Rethugs.

I see it as a way to put down the thoughts of another, like a Bullie.
And, in my view, that's why DU is a DISCUSSION Board ~ we share our ideas and help each other to understand all sides of an argument.

That is DU at its best!

It hurts me to think that Democrats would act that way to each other, after all we are on the same side ~ aren't we?

My grandmother always told me "Don't ever put anything in writing that you would be ashamed of later -- you are from OUR family and you know better."

10. DU has always been brutal on minority viewpoints.
Anyone who remember the last primary season, particularly the handful of us who supported Clinton (and survived the purge) must get a chuckle each week when a new crop of freshly-offended are sent scampering for their big boy (or girl) undies.

DU feels like a big group hug, until you say something controversial, at which point it turns into chimp warfare, complete with cannibalism.

45. The thing that gets me is the imaginary words you wrote.
Once someone decided that you are in violation of doctrine, and he has accused you of being a Republican troll dwelling in the basement of the Citibank Centre at Liberty University, he proceeds to respond NOT to what you have written, but to what he is imagining that you REALLY meant.

Is it too much to expect people to read what is written and contain their imagination about what is going unsaid? After all, why would someone on an anonymous bulletin board not write exactly what he means? And if he can't do that without being bounced, then why would he want to hang out on that board anyway?

Bottom line is this- if my thoughts get me bounced, then this is a fucked up place.

56. That's right.
"All that stuff you found in the white spaces between the lines? If I thought those things, I would have written them."

This is a site for progressive democrats. I think I'm a progressive democrat. Others may disagree, and they are welcome to. Absent a convincing argument, I'm not going to change my views to simply conform to accepted doctrine.

To suggest that the incivility problem is a new phenomenon, or even avoidable, is incorrect.

95. To suggest that it can be fixed is even more asinine
Even with a narrowly focused political forum, there's going to be contention, and that's a very good thing. Ideas only get better when they are challenged and if they can't stand being challenged here, they aren't likely to last long if they ever see the light of day. I often disagree with a lot of people here, including you, but that doesn't mean I want to see you bounced because your ideas aren't in lock step with mine. So even if we possibly could avoid the incivility by shitcanning all those with opposing viewpoints they feel passionately about, then DU would be nothing more than a forum where everyone sits around and agrees with each other. Besides man nipples, I can think of few things more worthless.

There's a collection of doctrinal positions, and if you step out of that box, you can expect that issue's interest group to pounce and try to bully you back into the box, or at least into silence. It's like each issue has it's own little five man A-Team. It's almost funny.

Some people think they are above the rules. These are generally people who take themselves way too seriously and are angry most of the time. The Mods usually put them in their place.

115. There are degrees IMO - examples here
Edited on Thu Oct-22-09 02:42 PM by slackmaster
If I say "you are repeating someone else's lie without having checked the facts", that is not the same as calling you a liar. It means you have posted something that is demonstrably untrue even though you were not the author of the statement in question. It is accusing you of indulging in intellectual laziness, appeal to authority fallacy, etc., which are negative behaviors but not as bad as creating an intentional fabrication.

If I say "the statement you wrote is a lie", that is the same as saying "you lied" or "you are lying", which is a step worse than the first example but not as severe as calling you a chronic or habitual liar. It comes close to being an outright personal attack, and I have seen moderators strike posts of that nature. Maybe you are a basically honest person who told an isolated lie in the heat of passion.

Saying "You are a liar" is the strongest and most clearly a personal attack. It means you are a bad person and that nothing you say is worthy of being taken seriously. There is no question IMO that such a statement violates the forum rules.

14. I think everyone that is a regular at DU, or anyone who has a strong opinion about something
has been called names. And sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it's easy to forget and stay above the fray.

Usually, when people start calling me names or lodge insults at me, I just stop responding. It's not worth it. I'm sure they think they've "won" and made their point, but really all they've proven is how childish they are, and if they can't respect others they themselves don't deserve any respect.

Sometimes the best response is the :eyes: icon. Then just move along. They didn't win anything, they lost the opportunity to make their point.

25. That's how I deal with them, too.
I think DU simply reflects our society, which is becoming more rude everyday. Just go grocery shopping during a busy time & you'll see how rude the majority of people are. They are so self absorbed that they are completely unaware that their cart is askew & blocking the entire aisle, making people wait while they read labels or decide between the cheesy mac or the tomato mac dinner. :eyes: On the road, it's even worse, because their bad behavior is often careless & can endanger others. But hey, they got to the fucking red light before you did. :eyes:

I've become more & more reclusive as I get older. I used to love concerts. Now, I'd rather buy a concert DVD than deal with the masses of asses that constitute the American public.

Damn! I sound like an old fart. ;)

ps - I'll bet I use the :eyes: icon more than any other!

I think that is most commonly used as an insult. Not to respond to insults, but in lieu of an actual argument.

Person A: "I think X is true"
Person B: yeah, sure :eyes:

Meaning "I think you are a total idiot who has just said something monumentally stupid."

It's not like they want to make a point as much as they want to score a hit with some flung excrement.

88. To me, they can mean other things.
Like, "right...whatever you say...you know best..."

They can be insulting, but I usually use them as a whatever, or oh, brother.

It's often hard to discern what people's intentions are on forums. You can't see emotion, and what is clear to the writer often isn't to the reader. I see old messages of mine from time to time that don't come across the way I'd intended. Unfortunately, it's usually too late to edit them by the time I find them.

One forum I'm on has a smilie with the middle finger raised. Another has a smilie with a blow torch confronting another smilie, which ends up getting burned to a crisp. Those forums can get a bit lively at times, but they aren't political in nature.

I have read some of my old posts and wondered "what the hell is this guy talking about?" Probably I thought I was being clear at the time. There was a sub-argument in my head that I expected to be clear to everybody.

Just like I have been riding with people and I will think "we need to turn here" and then not say it, as if I expect people to read my thoughts.

33. It's the 'Dungeon' spew spill-over. I've received PMs re DU's most belligerent posters
... so yes, many have picked up on it, and don't care for it. Interestingly it's this group of people who thrive on negativity who accuse others of the doing the same, even when it's obviously not the case.

For anyone who has spent any amount of time here, it becomes fairly easy to spot any from that bunch. Many of them have user names that sound 'edgy' and anti-establishment, yet they're the most hateful ones against any signs of "Loony Left."

Basically it's the crusading name-callers who bully and call everyone else "crazy" or "hater," (projection) and who detest conspiracy theorists, or anyone who questions official doctrine.

76. Is meanness, being mean, or meaner the latest DU obsession?
DUers can be narrow minded when it comes to views or opinions that disagree with theirs and they feel self-righteous and justified in being that way.

It is too bad that DUers cannot disagree more agreeably and treat those with whom they disagree the way they would like to be treated rather than engage in juvenile name calling which only indicates a lack of intellect in garnering an intelligent counter argument.

Another possibility is that it is just accepted as a given that 'hfojvt is an ignorant idiot' so many people no longer feel the need to prove it or state it any more than they would argue or state that the earth is spherical.

You start a lot of threads, and often as not, they're flamebait, and appear to be intended to start fights. I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but when you routinely start threads that are intended to insult and provoke DUers, expect some personal animus.

101. No, but it is intended to ridicule other posters.
There's nothing you said in this thread you couldn't have said in the thread started by another poster about THEIR feeling that DU is meaner. By starting this thread, you're clearly ridiculing all the posters who supported that thread.

I don't care for threads spawned by other threads, where the comments could have easily been delivered in the first thread. It says of the thread starter "my comment is too important for a post in their thread, I have to start my own." Much of thread starting is about the ego of the thread starter. I mean, look at this place. Isn't it obvious that a number of regular thread starters have a desperate need for attention and/or approval?

123. It's not enjoyment. It's coping.
Sometimes I get very upset by some of the anti-Democratic or anti-Obama posts here that are nothing but baseless attacks or kneejerk reaction to a b.s. story that later we find out was completely false. I admit sometimes instead of clicking submit, I should close the browser window and walk away from the computer. But other times, I feel compelled to speak out on the attacks. This is what gets me labelled as an Obamabot or cheerleader. Fine. I can live with that. But I will speak out when I need to regarding baseless criticism of some Democrats or Obama.

but I believe that this is a necessary topic of discussion. And no, I don't have near as many posts (on DU) as most DU-ers, but as a long-time participant on other Democratic discussion boards, DU does indeed require a thicker skin than most.

From observation, and feedback from others who have attempted to post on DU, I believe that due to the sheer size of the membership, and the broad spectrum of political philosophies represented here, DU could not possibly be any different than it is. It is neither "mean," nor is it "nurturing" -- it just represents a cross section of Middle America.

As for standard Internet "etiquette," DU tends to lean to the cruder side of public discourse, and at times exhibits attitudes and language that most people would not employ in a face-to-face situation.

This is not an attack on DU, nor any particular DU member, but just an observation.

I've been told by people here about half as long as I've been here that I don't belong. But I have to say my two favorites are "bitter" and "whinner", two things that anyone that knows me would never use to describe me.

I have a folder where I save all my favorites, here's one-

"you are an idiot you do not like the rich because they seceded they earned what they have. get the fuck out of this country you stupit dumb-ass you are the stupidest son of a bitch i have ever heard fuck you go get in line for your food stamps and welfare check you fucking bastard"

Granted, this was from a troll, but some of the responses in the thread were almost as bad and had the same exact flavor. That was the day I discovered how much the people of DU had been brain washed into thinking the wealthy are their friends.

I think I get called names more by people I agree with more than those I'm actually arguing with. I'll snap too but it seems some folks like to shoot well before they see the whites of your eyes. I guess too much keeping the powder dry may have created a few hair triggers but like I said, I've done it too. Just the other day I blasted on someone, assumed they were pushing trickle down, and jumped on them with both feet quicker than I think is fair.

There is also a little bit of a freeperish opposition to much nuance despite the constant claims of "not doing lockstep" and a near willful ignorance of process that creates instant misunderstanding.

131. Anyone who has been here a long time and engage in any type of real debate...

...will get it...

My personal favorite is Debbie Downer...

There is one user that whenever I post a criticism of the President says...

Oh, here comes Debbie Downer again. Makes me laugh every time I see it.

:)

132. Uh, is something wrong with me?
No one has called me any names. Is it something I've done? I don't think anyone has been rude either. Hmmm. Maybe it's my prose.

135. DU.. like the rest of the country.. has moved SO FAR to the right...
..it's hard to tell where the true middle is.

Thanks to our Corporate Media.. all Americans have been subjected to Ultra Right Wing Propaganda for the last 8 years.

You can kill kittens and drown puppies and you will get a certain percent of the public that will agree with torture.

The only problem is.. unemployed Americians are running out of food and getting hungry. When this happens.. they will awaken from their right-wing slumber... and claw for a morsel to eat.

Hungry people have a hard time supporting political parties. Stay tuned......
