11 girls burn themselves alive in Iraqi town in 3 months

Eleven girls have committed suicide by burning themselves in the Kurdish town of Zakho, a police source in the town said.

“It is the worst count in the history of women suicides in the town of Zakho,” the source added.

He said all the girls set themselves on fire “as they believed this is the easiest path to death.”

2. The Iraqis have to do everything hard core

Two girls I knew in high school tried to kill themselves one by taking pills and the other by cutting herself.

Dousing yourself with gas and then lighting yourself on fire is taking things to a new level and not in a good way.

5. Zakho is a conservative Islamist town

If I had to guess, life there isn't that great for young girls. The Kurds are Sunnis have have their Islamist parts too like Ansar al-Islam.

Small Turkish forces shelled a village northern Zakho

Turkish forces shelled with artillery the area of northern Zakho, on the borders of Kurdistan (Iraq), but no casualties or injuries were reported, eyewitnesses in Bativa in northern Zakho said on Sunday.

"The shelling occurred on Sunday, about 2 km north of the village of Nazdor," Mustafa Shilani, a local from the village, said.

Zakho lies just on the border between Kurdistan region (Iraq) and Turkey.

He said no casualties resulted from the attack but it caused panic among the villagers.
