Corzine's Car Traveling 91 Mph Before Crash

AP
TRENTON, N.J. (April 17) - The SUV carrying Gov. Jon S. Corzine was traveling about 91 mph moments before it crashed, Superintendent of State Police Col. Rick Fuentes said Tuesday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Talk About It: Post Thoughts
The governor was critically injured when the vehicle crashed into a guardrail on the Garden State Parkway just north of Atlantic City last week. He apparently was not wearing his seat belt as he rode in the front passenger's seat.

The speed limit along that stretch of the parkway is 65 mph.

The state trooper-driven sport utility vehicle was in the left lane with its emergency lights flashing when a pickup tried to get out of its way. Instead, it set off a chain reaction that resulted in the crash.

Corzine's list of injuries was extensive: He broke his left thigh bone, a dozen ribs, collarbone and chest bone. He also fractured a vertebrae in his lower back.

He remains in critical but stable condition Tuesday and doctors were assessing when he might be ready to breathe without a ventilator.

Doctors have said he doesn't have brain damage or paralysis, and is doing well for someone who sustained so many injuries.

3. 90 MPH??!!?? I live in California, so most times we are lucky to
make 40 mph due to traffic... but even on a fast highway with little traffic 90 mph would be very fast.
If they drive that fast, not only should he have been wearing seat belt, but a shoulder harness and crash helmet.

12. it's fast, but common on the Parkway
I don't do 90 when I'm driving on it, but have definitely gone 75-80 just to keep up with the flow of traffic...the NJ Parkway is now for the faint of heart.

Still that trooper should get into trouble for going too fast

18. It's like that in New England. State troopers are the worst drivers, too.
Maybe not all, but every time I see a trooper on the road, they're driving too fast and tailgating like crazy. I know their job isn't the easiest, but it really creeps me out when I see traffic laws flagrantly ignored by law enforcers. It's like they've signed a Unitary Executive Statement.

4. The driver should be cashiered
There is absolutely NO reason for driving that fast. There was no emergency. Don Imus would have still been a racist, misogynistic homophobe by the time he arrived. Such things don't have expiration dates.

Driving 20 MPH over the speed limit is automatically a reckless driving charge in my state.

6. Wouldn't he have died if he was going that fast?

I've hit some very high speeds before, with the understanding in the back of my mind that if something went wrong... it would all be over.

14. Stupid.
SUVs are small trucks - not race cars. Anything over 65 or 70 is pushing it.

19. I cringe whenever I see an SUV whiz past me on the interstate -
it's a 70 mph zone, and I'm doing around 75, only to see one of these drivers go past doing at least 10 mph faster than me. I've driven full-size pickups, and don't feel nearly as secure in them as I would in a car at a comparable speed...

22. So since Corzine is owed a citation for no seat belt....
the STATE COP driving the car he was in, should? or should not? have a ticket for speeding??? I am sure there is NO highway, freeway in this country that has a speed limit of 90mph, including the one they were on, or am I wrong??? As for excuses for driving that fast...there is none...if cops ARE speeding, and their speed is found to be excessive, w/o cause...they can be ticketed..
