So The Real Unemployment Rate Hovers Around 20%
If you include folks that work part time that want to work full time and folks who have become so demoralized looking for jobs that aren't there that they quit. I live in Central Florida and I see lots of empty businesses and stalled projects. I sometimes go to a Catholic Church in downtown Winter Park across the street from a condominium that is being built. I don't think there has been anything done on it since April. All there is the shell.

It's unbelievable and sad.

1. That's terrible! I wonder how the real numbers shake out by state?

3. The Official Unemployment Rate Is 11%
That doesn't include the legions of independent contractors who are are unemployed or underemployed.

7. Yes; I'm just wondering about the actual numbers, as opposed to the reported.
In the different states. I retired almost 3 years ago, and I know that since then even the well-established contractors in my field have downsized dramatically, and are still not "busy."

8. I haven't been able to find that for months--the "U6" by state
The U3 in NC is 10.6%, but I know the U6, assuming it accurately reflects the contract-less self-employed, underemployed, and discouraged unemployed, has got to be around 18-20%.

But I NEVER see anyone in the mainstream NC press talk about the U6, or that the 10.6% has got to be a lot higher. There are hundreds of applicants per opening for basic administrator positions in the university system. Faculty are used to this, but it has spilled over into staff. First time in my 40-odd years I've seen anything like it.

And a lot of these jobs aren't coming back. That's what no one will say.

2. And those who are falling off unemployment, like my mother.
Who also lives in FL.

Speaking of, if you get any employment leads in Central FL or the Tampa Bay area, please let me know. Things are getting desperate. My 90 year-old grandfather who still works part-time to make ends meet is having to support her considering I'm still in school and can't help much.

6. A bit of everything, but mostly bookkeeping.
She's more specifically trained to do medical billing and coding, but will take what she can get.

I'll let her know about that sign, thanks.
