South Carolina Republican officials on Jews being penny-pinchers
Edited on Tue Oct-20-09 12:05 PM by usregimechange

"There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves..." ~Jim Ulmer is the chairman of the Orangeburg County Republican Party and Bamberg County GOP chairman Edwin Merwin.

What next?

2. My grandmother believed in that theory & she was German!
I believe in it too and I'm German/Irish. I don't see it as a slam at all. I can't believe the number of people I hear say "of it's only $30/mo. Thhat's $360/year! Call me whatever you want, I know I save a LOT of $$ every year by NOT spending on things that shound inexpensive.

3. Well that's the point. It's not that the concept is bad, it's
characterizing Jews (or any group)as having certain traits that's bad. In actuality, Jews probably have that particular trait in the same percentage as everyone else.

5. If I suggest that Native Americans have great reverence for the earth,
Does this make me "anti-Native American"?

4. I agree, while it may be a stereotype,

it doesn't sound like he's trying to portray them in a negative way, so it's hard to conclude that he has something against "the Jews". If anything, it sounds more like he'd like to emulate them (or the stereotype of them, anyway).

6. But there was no reason to mention Jews, that's the thing.
He could have easily written, "there's a saying that if you watch the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves." Same point, and not a single stereotype.

7. Is it a Jewish saying?
I don't know, I've never heard it before. If it is, it's not uncommon to attribute a saying to the people responsible for it. "An old Chinese proverb says... " and such.

8. Sounds more like a Ben Franklin aphorism, but I don't know.
And I agree, if he had written, "A wise rabbi once said, . . . ." then it would be a different story. But that's not what he wrote.
