Somali Women Whipped for Wearing Bras

Somalia’s hardline Islamist group al Shabaab is cracking down on residents who do not follow a strict form of Sharia Islamic law, now publicly whipping women who wear bras, the Times of India reported.

Residents tell the paper that gunmen have been gathering women in Mogadishu who are perceived to have firm busts. These women are then publicly whipped by masked men as punishment for what Islamist leaders call deception.

After the public whippings, the women are forced to remove their bras and shake their breasts, the Times reported.

“Al Shabaab forced us to wear their type of veil and now they order us to shake our breasts,” a resident, Halima, told the Times of India. Her daughters were whipped for wearing bras.

“They first banned the former veil and introduced a hard fabric which stands stiffly on women’s chests. They are now saying that breasts should be firm naturally, or just flat,” she said.

The insurgent group recently amputated a foot and a hand from two young men accused of robbery. Al Shabaab has also banned movies, musical ringtones, dancing at wedding ceremonies and playing or watching soccer.

There are several passages in Islam which can be interpreted to require women to cover themselves, but NONE limit what women may wear under the veil or prohibit them from dressing nicely under the veil. Many women in Islamic countries wear modern clothing under their veils, which are only used as coverings when out in public.

To declare that women are banned from wearing certain types of clothing UNDER their veils isn't "fundie", because there's nothing about that anywhere in Islam. In fact, there are passages that suggest that a woman SHOULD make herself attractive beneath her veil (for her husband, of course). A devout Muslim woman in a fundie country can walk around wearing pasties and a g-string under her veil, and not violate a single tenet of the most fundamentalist forms of Islam while doing so.

My guess is that this is just a bunch of power mad jackasses who are getting off on the idea that they can make women jiggle their boobs in public.

Even Iran, which nobody here would call an enlightened pro-woman nation, wouldn't do anything like this. When a woman needs to be searched, they call female officers in to do it. Even they understand that it's improper for men to be gawking at women.

Someone should point out to these Somali's that the traditional Islamic punishment for forcing a woman to reveal herself from beneath her veil was execution. Traditionally, what these men are doing would have been considered rape.

fight back. I don't know how, but maybe ex-patriot women can organize into a militia, get some training, and go back into Somalia and form guerilla groups among the women and arm them, so the next time those male idiots do something like that, they just get shot. There's no laws in that country so they couldn't get them for shooting them or having illegal weapons. They will try to send some male Sharia law jerks around again, and again they need to shoot them until they get the picture. Those burqa-like outfits that Muslim women must wear are ideal for concealing weapons.

Sometimes my inner Amazon comes out. Women shouldn't stand for being physically abused just because they have been socialized not to fight back. They need to learn martial arts and how to shoot guns.
