Conyers Wants More Interviews

by emptywheel

John Conyers isn't done with his interviews. Yesterday he requested interviews with eight more DOJ employees:

* Rachel Paulose (USA for Minnesota)
* Steven Biskupic (USA for Eastern Wisconsin)
* Mary Beth Buchanan (USA for Western Pennsylvania)
* Larry Gomez (Interim USA for New Mexico and First AUSA under Iglesias)
* Matthew Friedrich (COS and Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division)
* John Kelly (Deputy Director, EOUSA)
* John Nowacki (Principal Deputy Director, EOUSA)
* Tasia Scolinos (Director of Public Affairs for DOJ)

I'm guessing that HJC is working in several different directions with this request. Scolinos and Nowacki have been very involved with discussions about how to implement the USA firings and how to respond to the aftermath, so they'll offer yet another version of the ever-changing explanation for the firings.

They're bringing the incompetent Rachel Paulose, presumably to hear her tales about how surprised she was to become USA. But they're also bringing John Kelly, the guy who tried to stave off the self-demotion of the managers in Paulose's office and the guy who is currently baby-sitting Paulose in MN. So I presume the committee is interested in hearing more about the rapid destruction of the USA office in MN.

They're bringing Steven Biskupic to find out whether he brought a crappy public corruption case to avoid being fired. Given his mention of bringing 12 cases against Republicans since 2002, I'd also like to know if he was originally on the list to be fired because he put some big fundraiser in jail. (And note, HJC has also asked the RNC for any emails discussing Biskupic; those might be interesting).

Much More at...........

AND...a little more from Coyers actual letter linked at site about...where Conyers requests these interviews in RESPONSE to them denying him the e-mails he asked for. Looks like he might be upping things to get the necessary testimony that might allow Senate to go after those e-mails with Subpeona's (which Senate has been holding back on waiting to see how Conyers progresses)

Here's quote from Conyers letter:

Conyers made his request in a letter to Richard A. Hertling, the acting assistant attorney general, in response to the committee’s initial round of interviews and after the department failed to comply with a committee request for additional, uncensored documents in its ongoing investigation. The committee announced Monday afternoon that the department would not meet that deadline.

2. They are going to vote tomorrow on whether to grant her Immunity.
They must feel her testimony is vital to moving the whole thing forward.

4. ah, goodling, cool! But can they force her to testify and not plead
the fifth? Can you MAKE someone take immunity? I guess if you can, then they can argue that since self-incrimination is impossible, she must answer. But that's the ol' "pig in a poke" the Fitzy had in useless (one assumes---or was he useful?) Ari Fleischer. And what would keep her from giving the old 'gee, I don't really remember' refrain.

10. If given immunity and still refusing to
testify I'm sure she would be held in contempt of Congress and jailed till she decided to talk or another Congress is seated.

There's a lot more names that should be mentioned and subpoenaed-hopefully they will appear soon--many of them are on this 2006 WH Salary List that was compiled by Alexis Simendinger for National Journal

I haven't got any links to "voter fraud" issues, but I remember seeing on the teevee some interview suggesting the same.
