Soldiers at Iraq site asked to get medical exam
Troops at treatment plant potentially exposed to cancer-causing chemical

updated 7:09 p.m. ET, Tues., Oct . 13, 2009

WASHINGTON - Six years after nearly 1,200 U.S. soldiers in Iraq were potentially exposed to a sometimes deadly chemical linked to cancer, the military and Veterans Affairs Department have been tracking them down and asking them to get a medical exam.

The troops were protecting or in the area of workers hired by a subsidiary of the contractor, KBR Inc., based in Houston, to rebuild the Iraqi water treatment plant Qarmat Ali near Basra, Iraq. The chemical was sodium dichromate, and it had contaminated the area.

In June, The Associated Press chronicled the health problems of the soldiers who had served at the site. Sickness with symptoms ranging from chest pain to lung disease and even death among troops who served there have been blamed on exposure at the site.

KBR, which is facing at least five pending related lawsuits, denies wrongdoing. It says its conduct was governed by its contract with the U.S. military, which was to ensure work sites were free from environmental hazards. Once the contamination was found, it says it notified the Army and helped clean up the site.

2. I keep saying that every one of our military bases should be training

a portion of their people in the ways of HAZMAT to start cleaning up our toxic bases.

toxic bases cannot be ignored any longer.

4. This just keeps getting more and more pathetic.
I won't get into whether the the war was justified or not.

However, between this story, the electrocutions due to improper wiring, the less than great body armor that's resulted in deaths and injuries, the poorly armored vehicles,....etc. why aren't more people facing charges for the way that we've mistreated our own troops?

I wonder just how much money Cheney has made from this debacle? And no, I probably don't really want to know because I'm sure that it must be a truly disgusting amount regardless of how much it is.

6. K&R to spotlight KBR's outstanding war profiteering.
We told them when we found the chemical we had been using, and even helped clean it up, so we should be good to go?

Who do they think they are? Blackwater/Xe?

7. Corporations don't care about this.
They didn't care even here in the US of A and still don't as long as they don't live anywhere near the toxic areas and they know just where they are.
There have been countless toxic spills and after burns and dumping right here , never bothered them. What's a number of soldiers and many people who live in the ME to them?

Leave it to man to come up with this horrific toxic shit. I suppose it's all organic in the sense that all of it came from the earth , some things were not intended to be mixed or dug up.
