as that is specific and clear, as most everyone here knows who he is.

All bigotry needs to be confronted, whether it's the crazies in Topkea, or the anti-Christian zealots in GD.

Thanks!

32. How the HELL is this bigotry
Is Fred Phelps a Christian? Yes, he is. Is he going to protest the funerals? Yes, that is apparently his intent at the time. Does the other thread say that ALL Christians are going to protest? Nope. Not at all. Does the other thread say that ALL Christians are asshats like Freddie is? Not even close.

Please explain how that thread is bigotry. Please grow a little thicker skin and realize that christianity (whatever sect) is not immune to criticism just because you might get your widdle feelings hurt.

If you have headlines that say "Blacks rob a convenience store" isn't that evidence of bigotry against blacks even if it happens to be true in the case in question?

148. Wonder how many "liberal" culture warriors realize such headlines are no longer acceptable in print
E.g. "Fires break out in black neighborhood as blacks and mexicans riot."

"But it's true!", The out-of-touch culture warriors (many of whom are white)
will insist.

150. Please actually explain
1. Is Phelps Christian? Yes. He is a baptist.
2. Are there others going that are Christian? Yes.
3. Is the reason they are protesting because of their Christian dogma? Yes.
4. Does the OP claim that all Christians will protest (or their representatives)? No.
5. Does the OP claim that Phelps is representative of all Christians? No.

How is that bigotry to say that people are going to protest because their Christians dogma leads them to believe that they should protest against gays?

2. Are there others going that are American? Yes.
3. Is the reason they are protesting because of their American beliefs in free speech? Yes.
4. Does this post claim that all Americans will protest? No.
5. Does this post claim that Phelps is representative of all Americans? Yes. After all,
nobody's going to stop him.

159. #3 is your problem
He and his group are not going to protest their views on freedom of speech. They are going to protest something they see as a sin because of their Christain dogma. The fact that they CAN protest because of freedom of speech does not mean they are protesting because of it (or, to put it another, more clear, way: it doesn't mean that is the reason/cause for their protest). Their dogmatic beliefs are the cause/reason for their protest.

I like you. I've told you that on several occassions. But why does it seem when there is an uproar about Christian "bigots" you are right there trying to defend them, but when the discussion is about those are bigoted against atheists (this generally being in R/T where you are present but others here in GD may not be so) you seem absent from support for the atheists?

that the people defending the atheists on those threads are the atheists. It would be nice to get a little love from the theist side once in a while.

On edit: I think we do just fine defending ourselves, but it is the perception that I am talking about. It would help to know that the defense of bigotry is not just one way for theists.

since some atheists have been rude and insulting to theists---sorry, but I think your definition of bigotry and mine are different. I have observed that theists and atheists think differently from one another, which is one of the big reasons why there is misunderstanding.

You aren't going to defend atheists in R/T because SOME atheists have been rude. How is that different than the bigotry that you and others are saying exists toward Christains (i.e. lumping everyone together and judging all by the worst--which I don't believe has been done in this instance, for the record).

38. Don't be so damn obtuse.
At least stop being that way on purpose.

Phelps is a christian. Get over it. He is going to protest because his particular sect of Christianity (which I would argue is just as valid to be called Christian as any other sect) believes what they believe. He is protesting BECAUSE OF HIS CHRISTIAN BELIEFS. I understand his beliefs might not be the same as yours, but that is why the other thread is titled as it is. He is not protesting because of his dogmatic Americanism or his training as a lawyer.

I am amazed at how quick people whine about any criticism of Christianity. 400 years of being the majority religion has turned you into a bunch of weaklings.

Thanks for continuing the "I'm so obtuse" schtick. It's really fun.

Phelps is not doing what he is doing because he is from Kansas. He is doing it because his Christian beliefs are leading him to it. That is why it is not bigotry to say that there are Christians that are going to protest the funerals.

118. I think that most people understand what you are saying
Goblin.... and I would like to turn it around to you for a moment. You honestly think that the OP in the other thread had NO ulterior motive in posting that "Christians" were going to protest rather than Phelps and his ilk? Sure... I'll even say that Phelps is a Christian. But, there is still a HUGE difference there. It's like saying Muslims want all Americans dead! when referring to Al Queada. It's a purposeful malignment of a truth. It's twisting an idea around while staying technically true. It's an unfair characterization being used in order to agitate emotion, and I think that defending the wording is actually indicative of being as obtuse as you are accusing posters in this thread of being.

It's a purposeful characterization. The omition of Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church were not omitted accidentally in the OP. That IS the story, yet here we have an arguement about Christianity and what constitutes it in the face of a total asshole doing something so hateful and wrong that it's going to hurt a lot of people. It's ridiculous, and I truly believe that it was intentional on the OP's part.

165. I appreciate what you are saying
Yes, I will admit that there was inclusion of Christians for effect. I think the original poster admitted that in the other thread, to you. That does not make it bigotry, which is what I am trying to indicate here.

But just because he is an asshole doesn't mean that you can seperate the Christianity from him. I agree. He is a douche. And not all Christians are douches. I would venture to guess that the majority are not assholes. But the point is that the interpretation of Christianity that Phelps relys on is not a fringe interpretation. It is the same interpretation (albeit more fanatically presented) that led to the crusades, the inquisitions, the witch trials, the attacks on homosexuality that still exist in catholicism and other christian sects. That is a point that needs to be made and there are a lot of non-christians that wish the non-asshole christians would be more vocal in their opposition to Phelps and that level of interpretation and that does not mean disavowing him from christianity but actually trying to change/challenge the dogma.

I think that is the point of the other post and not bigotry.

Thank you for the reasonable response; the first of its kind on this thread. Appreciate it.

Yes, Phelps is a Christian. We cannot take that from him - that is for God to do.

He is protesting because of his beliefs which have NOTHING to do with the teachings and words of Christ.

You CANNOT find ANYTHING in the words of Christ that would support what Phelps is doing. Not one word.

Phelps is a loathsome man. He says that he is a Christian. Don't lump the rest of us Christians with that man because we aren't anything like him.

170. Ah, nice try. I am not arbitrating what is and what is not Christianity
The Bible does that quite nicely.

If you read what I wrote, you'll see that I acknowledged that Phelps is, indeed, a Christian. It is not for me to make that determination.

If you'd continue to read what I wrote, you'll see that I wrote that Phelps cannot justify ANYTHING that he is doing with any of the words of Christ. You can't do it. You just can't.

A Christian focuses on the Bible, yes, but we try to live by the teachings and words of Christ. Those words never included any of the hatred that Phelps preaches.

178. Can it please be clear that I don't believe what I argue in this post.
Edited on Tue Apr-17-07 10:32 PM by Goblinmonger
I am an atheist, so the whole Jesus thing is a myth to me. But I have had a difficult time in the past with people misinterpreting my posts.

So, again, to be clear, I don't agree with what I argue here.

The sermon on the mount makes it clear that Jesus is not taking away the old laws (i.e. the old testament) but that he is fulfilling them. Matthew continues to go on to the "pluck out your eye" if you look at a hot chick line. All of this is in Matthew 5 somewhere around 10-30 (been a while since the old seminary days).

That alone seems like a pretty clear indication that the old testament would still apply. Hence Leviticus is NOT out an still is the law.

I can turn it on you, too, and ask where does Jesus specifically deny what Phelps says about homosexuality. The answer is nowhere.

Hebrews 13(?) does tell us that the marriage bed should remain undefiled which would include both heterosexual and homosexual affairs.

1 Corinthians somewhere about the beginning of 6 tells us that homosexuals will not inherit the kingdom of god. Of course it is a big long list of people that won't, but it is there in the new testament. Now I know it is vogue of people to say Paul wasn't a real christian, but, hey, he made the cut and is in the bible, so he has some juried publication going for him.

Jesus says in Mark 10 that god created male and female and that marriage is between the two sexes which would indicate that homosexuality is not the norm and not what god wanted.

How about we turn to Luke. Jesus says in Luke 10 that god was right with what he did to Sodom.

That's enough rememberin' for now. Clearly to say there is no argument for homosexuality being wrong according to christ is a little disingenuous.

183. Jesus did not say anything about homosexuality, no
He DID say that one of the two greatest commandments was to "love thy neighbor as thyself." So, from that, you can extrapolate that His answer to Phelps would be, "Why are you breaking my commandment? Why do you not have love in your heart for people who are gay? What you are doing is in direct conflict with my teachings."

It's not disingenous at all. Christ preached love, tolerance, kindness, charity and peace. None of what Phelps is doing is in line with any of those.

You can bend and twist all that you want but Christ's words and teachings are in direct conflict with what Phelps is doing. So, what Phelps is doing is in direct violation with the teachings of Christ.

I can't say that any clearer than that. I'm sorry that you feel the need to try and twist all of this around to make it appear as though Christ would support Phelps in any way, shape or form. It just doesn't hold water.

And that is not my interpretation. If you take all of the words of Christ and compare them with what Phelps is doing, you won't find any support from Christ at all.

184. I'm kind of disappointed
that is your only response is "you're wrong."

OK, that's not fair. You did bring up the love your neighbor bit. Doesn't that contradict the Sodomn was destroyed for good reason? He tells us that god still hates people like those in Sodomn.

What about the other passages. I don't think I am twisting any of those passages one bit. I could say that you are twisting the "love your neighbor" when there are other passages that disagree.

Finally, I was not showing you what I believed. You asked for passages that support Phelps and I gave them to you.

186. Where does Jesus contradict "Love thy neighbor"? Where?
He doesn't. You can't find any where He says that it's okay to hate.

You can be disappointed all you want. I asked for the words or teachings of Jesus Christ that support what Phelps is doing. You couldn't give me any because there are NONE.

Argh! Sodom was NOT destroyed because of homosexuality. Sodom was destroyed because of immorality of the entire town. God only found 1 righteous person in the town. The Sodomites surrounded Lot's house and wanted to talk to the 2 male angels that God had sent. Lot and his family escaped and God destroyed Sodom. The fact that some have tried to turn that into "God destroyed Sodom because of gay people" doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Scripture could be twisted that way, I suppose, but ONLY because the word "sodomy" and what it's meaning has become today. So, people say, "Well, sodomy means anal sex and so that must mean that Sodom was full of gay people and that's why God destroyed it." That's not correct.

As far as "Love thy neighbor as thyself" - there is NO way to twist that. How can you twist that? You can't. It's pretty darn clear. In fact, that commandment alone is why I am a liberal and believe in equal rights for all. There is no wiggle room.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:43)

So, I ask you again: Find in the teachings of Christ a verse that supports Phelps and what he is doing. Why is that important? Because being a Christian entails following the words of Christ. A Christian should follow the words and teachings of Christ. Christians should follow Christ not Phelps or Falwell or Robertson or any earthly preacher. They should follow Christ.

If Phelps seriously followed the teachings of Christ, he would be somewhere quietly helping the poor and downtrodden. He darn sure wouldn't be picketing funerals.

Please explain to me how the title of the other thread is bigoted. Is Phelps a Christian? Yes, he is a member of a Baptist sect. Is he and others from his church protesting? Yes. Does that other thread say that all Christians are protesting? No. Does that other thread compare Phelps to all Christians or say all Christians are like Phelps? No.

Please explain to me how it is bigotry, then. I'm still waiting for that answer after having asked it three times on this thread.

We're having a little fun with another thread that was specifically designed to cause an uproar.

Thanks, you've done a grand job making this one entertaining as well!

Nice work, do you do satire professionally? Got a site I can look at?

103. Good lord, I didn't parse your kick
I parsed the portion of the kick in which you described what you were kicking it "over" which, according to your description, was hate. Are you now claiming that you don't think the other thread is hate? Are you now claiming that was just some toss off comment that didn't relate to the other thread? You asked where you called it bigotry and I showed you. If you disagree, please explain why instead of misrepresnting what I said.

Explain to me how "kicking it above the hate" is not an indication that blonde thinks the other thread is hate filled. I would love to see that explained. Stop throwing around meaningless catch phrases and actually formulate a cogent argument. I have yet to see one in this thread that has explained the bigotry of the other thread. I'm not expecting one from you, but at least I've asked.

172. I guess I get to say this a hundred times in this thread.
Was Pol Pot killing in the name of or because of his atheism? If he was (which he wasn't by the way) then it would be pertinent. Phelps is protesting because of his Christian dogma. It is what he believes God is doing because Phelps believes God sees homosexuality as an abomination (as the bible says it is). See the difference?

It's like this:

Bigoted and not necessary: "Look at Bob; he's a male nurse."
NOT bigoted and on-point: "Take this in the lounge and give it to the male nurse"

Bigoted and not necessary: "Christians hate gays."
NOT bigoted and on-point: "Christians will protest VT funeral services)

187. Bigoted and NOT true "Christians hate gays."
Not bigoted and (sadly) true: "Some Christians hate gays."

Bigoted and NOT true: "Christians will protest VT funeral services."

Not bigoted and (sadly) true: "Some Christians will protest VT funeral services."

Why is one bigoted? Because of the implication that all Christians will be protesting VT funeral services where in reality only a very small, very radical sect of Christians will be protesting the funerals. (I don't know of any Christian group out there that supports him.)

Flamebait: "Christians will protest VT funeral services." Why is that flamebait? Because not all Christians agree with Phelps and it's that implied "all" in there that lumps us all together.

If you can't see the difference, then you are either being deliberately obtuse or you just don't get it.

So, to make it very simple: Don't lump all of us Christian DUers in with Phelps. When you do that, then you ARE being an anti-Christian bigot.

I get that. I don't agree with the satirical point and have tried to make that clear (i.e. the other post wasn't bigotry). But at the point where you link to the other post in a manner that caused other people to go over there and post, it seems to me to be a case of "rallying the troops" which would (and has) gotten people banned from the atheist forum.

Just so I am clear and concise:

OP = fine
Linking to get other like-minded people to go to thread = not fine

This is a fallacy.

Ergo, it is a fallacy
to proclaim that Phelps' actions are unrelated to his beliefs as an American.

176. It has never been argued
that the American bit doesn't apply because of a "no true american" fallacy.

Did you get a bulk discount at the strawman sale in your town, or what?

The point is that the fact he is American is NOT why he is protesting. It makes it possible in our free society (though there are those on here that argue he shouldn't have that right which is interesting but another discussion all together). He is doing it because of his Christian dogma. A fact you have NEVER addressed. Since that is the cause of his protest, it seems reasonable to mention the cause when discussing the protest.

But hey, just keep repeating things to catapult the propaganda (who was it that said that again?).
