Do you care if the non-profit insurance companies are killed? Not so fast.....
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 04:07 PM by Traveling_Home
I hadn't thought about this

Blue Cross Blue Shield is a non-Profit

Yet, in 29 of the 43 states that data are available for… the dominant company in the “full” insurance market is a non-profit company. In state after state, Blue Cross and Blue Shield hold the largest market share. On average, the largest non-profit hold over half of the “full” market share in those 29 states. Why add another non-profit operation to the mix?

3. It varies by state
and they have converted from non profit to for profit in several states, forgoing the tax break given to non profits in favor of raking in what the other insurance giants do.

4. Thom Hartman has talked about non-profit does not mean no-profit.
All they have to do is make sure they pay the Execs huge sums of money to balance the bottom line.

6. Blue Cross operates very much like a for-profit enterprise.....
.....ask those who've had their claims denied.

7. The only large health care organization that exists today as a true non-profit
is Kaiser-Permanente from what I understand. I don't think BC/BS have been for some time. Being traded on the stock exchange is a clue to profitability.

9. Non profit does not mean anything. So they spend all their income on salaries
and fancy cars, planes and buildings. Because some businesses are non-profit, do not confuse that with being any different than a for profit one. Always check a non-profit for how much of their income goes to administrative costs.

12. Health insurance exists to get between you and health care.
I'd rather my Kaiser just focus on health care - and I don't know that they would mind either.

13. I work for Kaiser
And you're right...we won't mind one bit. We're looking forward to health care reform and will work with the public option, not against it.
